1. LoR - Is 3 and only 3 advisable (over submitting 4)? For prelims and the fear of people not getting letter in a timely manner, I have >4 LoR, all people who know me well and I assume wrote good letters. That being said, is there any merit in submitting 4 good ones over 3 good ones?

2. Does, "did you apply here for your preliminary year" ever come up in residency interviews? If so, does it help your chances to apply near to a given program? I'll be applying coast to coast and would be happy in a number of places. I don't want to give any program I interview at the impression they're a backup or reach.

3. Should I list my submitted manuscripts in 'Publication' section or under research experience put we have submitted a manuscript to XXX?

1: I am sending 4, but one of them is a purely research letter.

2: No idea - would be interested to know this one.

3: There is a Peer Reviewed Journal Articles/Abstracts (Other than Published) category where you can list manuscripts at various stages of the publication process, so I put all my submitted papers there.

1 - 3 excellent letters would be better than 4 good letters. Also, you do not need different letters for prelims. They know you aren't interested in medicine. I sent them the same 3 letters I used for rads and it was never questioned. Same goes for the personal statement

2 - I never got asked about prelims on the rads interviews, they don't care where you go

The only time I was ever asked if I applied to a prelim was when they were trying to rush people out of lunch so they wouldn't be late for the accompanying TY/prelim interviews. They don't care where you go, they just want you to get the year done with.

Thanks everyone for the very helpful responses.

We ask if people applied in the region for their prelim year. It is important information about the applicant's willingness to move to a specific region. For instance if you are applying for an advanced position in the Midwest but only applying for prelims in the Northeast then it signals that you more than likely don't want to wind up in the Midwest.
