Hey folks, I am new here and found this site after doing a Google search on Anesthesiology. I am 21 (getting at it a bit late) and thinking about doing a career change towards this field. After viewing the FAQ on this site, I know I need to get a 4 year Bachelors, 4 years of Med school, then 4 years of training with an optional additional year of training after that.

My first question is, how much (if any) do you typically earn while in training? What are the hours like? Also, what are the hours like in Med school and what does this typically cost (say University of Michigan for example)?

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

First of all, 21 is not too old to "get at it". To very succinctly answer your questions: you earn nothing while obtaining a bachelors and during your 4 years of medical school (you actually accrue several hundred thousands of dollars in debt), make about $38-50k during your 4 year residency, the hours are long and arduous and the cost varies greatly from public to private medical schools.

Best of luck in your future endeavors.
