I worked in an office which had a male assistant. No biggie.i would LOVE having male dental assistants in my office when i'm a dentist. a lot of the female assistants i have met have been mean out of jealousy or some other reason. grown women. they fight, they're caddy, they feel like they have to compete and keep up with each other, etc. (not all women, but some...please dont attack my post)
men are more calmer, more chill, and less high strung
And what dental schools did you get into may I ask? I got into 8 dental schools after citing in my interviews that my experiences assisting were the most meaningful. If you're above being a dental assistant, then it's likely you'll treat your dental assistants and staff badly. You have a bad attitude. If you have an ounce of pride as a man, you shouldn't be a dental assistant. Where is the ambition dogg? I don't care if you're only doing it for the experience and you wanna be a dentist some day. We're no longer homeys.

I think whatever the sex, the dental assistants need to be good looking. That could attract patients to come back.
One of my friends jokes that's going to be her gimmick when she opens her own practice. Most dentists are middle aged men and there's room for more attractive female dentists who draw in not only men but entire families. Especially with the internet, most people can see what their dentist or doctor looks like even before they step into the office.Yea, Contach is right. People want females because both men and women are more comfortable about having women around. And pretty assistants (like pretty nurses) bring in more money/patients. It's a fact.

I agree with everything here. My sentiments exactly.I worked as an assistant for an oral surgeon all 4 summers during undergrad. He offered me the job after I shadowed him one day. He just had me as an extra person in addition to his normal staff. It wasn't that he needed the help, its just that he has a successful practice and the $11/hour he paid me for the 8 weeks or so i worked during the summer wasn't really hurting him. I think he was happy to give me a good experience for myself, and for my application. It gave me the opportunity to get 40+ hours/week of dental experience the summer, and make better money than I would in almost any other summer job. I plan on owning my own practice down the road, and I feel that if I did the same thing for a pre-dental student looking for experience, I would tell the guy I worked for because that shows how much value I place on my own experience with him. If that dentist really didn't hire you because you're a male that is messed up considering they were once in your shoes. That is also pretty sad that some men applying to dental school would be so self conscious that they'd be too embarrassed or "proud" to work as an assistant. How is it not ambitious? It will only help you reach your goal of getting into dental school which really shows you're ambitious. The staff and patients will probably respect you and be interested in your schooling. The only people that will think there is something wrong with it are either losers on here that will probably correct any grammatical errors I made in this post as another way of making themselves feel better/superior, or people who are pretty damn insecure and better get some confidence before those interviews come around. I really think it pays to get any and as much experience you can get, especially if it involves getting your hands in patient's mouths.

I tried to, but I couldn't find any grammar errors. Dammit.
Good...looking at your numbers on predents you got problems if you need to make yourself feel better while applying to dental school by running spell checks on this site. Also, dont hate on my post because unless you get accepted to another school, theres a chance I might be your "big brother" come August orientation.

My inability to find grammar mistakes was a joke on two levels. (I did find errors, but I chose not to say anything.) lol
Naww meann, I have no intention of paying my deposit for Buffalo. But thanks, I'm sure you'll make someone else "very happy" 😉 wink wink.
You didn't like Buffalo, or just not a top choice? And I'm sure I will.
Oh, and seeing errors is fine. Not having, or being able to resist the urge to correct them in such an informal discussion is probably appreciated by most people on here (not necessarily to you contach).
One of the dentists I "shadowed" said he doesn't use male dental assistants because it got too weird. He said it was hard to have that professional boundary because they would become homeys. His male dental assistant would come up to him and be like yoooo dogggg you see that game last night? And he'd reply yeah brooo it was so ill.
Hi guys,
I tried to get a part time job as a dental assistant or receptionist.
BUT!!!! most of them want me to become a female🙁 What?
Any male got a job in this position??
After shadowing a general dentist for 2-3 months, I asked him to train me to be his assistant. He told me I would be happy to train you but we do not hire male dental assistant because it is not a good idea to have a male doctor, and a male assistant and a female patient. This opens the door to harassment issues and that is the reason he have all female assistants.
Does a dentist can deny to hire male assistant based on his argument about harassment?
