Ok

We all know that Rad is competitive. And one of the reasons is b/c of lifestyle.
Rad is very heavy on physics/math/technology.

So, is the field attracting many people who are 'nerdy' and yet like to have a family and free time (for social things out side of academics). Aren't nerds supposed to want to work work work, thus not care about 'lifestyle'?

Your thoughts.

Just judging from our upper level residents and the current crop of 1st years coming in, it seems that the upper levels, inluding our 2nd year class are more laid back, but smart people who aren't very "nerdy." Our 1st year class is composed of more hard working "gunner" types who also enjoy their free time. They compare how much they read and they all read much more than any of the other classes.

Something I've always noticed, is that the truly intelligent people, higher board scores, etc., in my med school class are actually usually pretty cool, laid back, enjoy free time, and have things come to them naturally. The gunner types are usually smart, but generally work much harder, and actually overcompensate by sucking up and everything else. Radiology seems to be attracting the first type, while medicine and surgery seem to attract he second type. Correct me if you have other experiences, but this is what I've seen...

Rads, Gas, Derm, PM&R residents are the coolest ones. IM and FP residents are generally losers. Orthopods are geeky wannabe frat boys. Neurosurg residents are wannabe Sanjay Gupta nerds who have a hard time getting laid. Surgery residents are no-life having pricks.

Sure there are exceptions, but I've found that for the most part these stereotypes are true.

😉

glad to see that rads are cool 🙂

hehe, i gotta say i agree...isn't it weird how these things work out? how did med students ever fall into these stereotypes?

How about pathology? Nerdy or Cool (like radiology)?

hey, I *am* a nerd. I want to be with my own kind. I'm sick of getting made fun of when I talk about some paper I read. Where do I go?

hey punk, you have any idea how many women throw themselves at dr. gupta? 😎

I've also noticed a lot of med students, after they choose a field, find the need to "adapt" to their specialties assumed stereotype.

Well, if we're talking about our own personal anecdotes, I'd have to disagree with the Dr. Cuts' rads assessment. Most of the rads residents I've met are crotchety, stressed-out, and unfriendly types who, I guess, have some sort of brain dysfunction from sitting in the dark all the time soaking-up the gentle glow of the fluorescent bulbs. Furthermore, I've found some radiology attendings to be just plain nuts. Again, I think this has to do with looking at scans and xrays all day long, sometimes at long stretches without much break, and have to having a high acuity for what they are looking at knowing that whomever they're reporting to expects a specific answer that may fry them in court. They get sick of knocks on the door with someone saying, "I really need you to look at this right now... please" and always seem on the brink of snapping into a postal-style rage. They tend to be very short-tempered and unfriendly (i.e., usually better left alone if at all possible to sit in their small rooms and stare at black-and-white negatives).

Then again, some radiologists are cool too. But, I find this to be the rare minority myself. I've met very few I would describe as "cool".

I think people should know this before they choose this field, especially if we're now going to blanketly accept personal observations as a valid way of assessing a discipline.

hey skip, chances are that you havent met the cool radiologists, probably because they're on vacation and enjoying their $500K + salary; while making more at the same time....reading from their laptops on the beach. 🙂

I've noticed some postal-type rads attendings at other hospitals besides my home instution. The thing I've noticed is that the academic radiologists can be snappy at times depending on their mood. I mean, they're only human.....maybe you caught them on one of their bad days.

Apparently you missed my clear sarcasm...

... which was mainly directed at one Dr. Cuts, along with the glad-handling, congratulatory, sycophantic, and unquestioning agreement of those who lack the ability to think deeper than the thickness of sprayed-on paint. Dr. Cuts has a history over the past several years on this forum of notoriously holding out his opinion as "the" valid way of looking at a subject. I take objection to his characterization of the "stereoptypes" he's listed, and I find it even more amusing that others so readily agree. Aren't we, after all, in a field that uses data and adequate, well-controlled studies to support our assertions in the pursuit of avoiding personal observation bias? At least, that's what I thought. In other words, show me the data. Or, don't offer your smelly opinions as fact and/or anything more than a weak attempt at humor (both of which they clearly weren't, Dr. Cuts).

Is this the characterization of your colleagues at LSU-Shreveport, or those previously somewhere off the coast of Florida?

I for one think the folks at the med center would find this hillarious coming from YOU!!!!! Well, at least I'm sure that they'll here about it (now). . .

Man. . .internet anonymity can make anyone into a smart, cool super-stud.

CUTS, are the chicks hot in Shreeveport?
I would have to disagree with CUTS.
ortho are cool as hell.
ENT are nerdier but still cool and smart.
Derm are obnoxious and lazy. Oh my god, a consult, what am I going to do??? It is 4 oclock, can't this wait till tomorrow.
Surgeons are mean but run the ship usually. chicks dig them big time.
I hate to break it to you Cuts, but Rads is not a glam specialty. I've never met any chick who said, I just saw that group of hottie Radiologists. Happens for surgeons all the time.
In my experience I find Rads to be either dorks or arrogant as hell and obsessed with the "lifestyle". Of course some are cool.
Then there are those that "can not rule out".
Cuts, to sum up, I "Can not rule out" that Rads are kind of tools and you inparticular.
Doing it up Shreeveport style for the 05.
You have been running your mouth on this board for years.
Are you an FMG?
