I know many of you will consider this to be a foolish question, but I am from Cali and I would prefer a nice city/state to live in if I don't get into a Cali school.

Thanks

texas

schools are hard-to-get-into for non-state residents, though.

stay away from detroit 😛 I wouldn't touch Philly with a pole of any length. Pittsburgh is slightly better, just a lot of remnants of a once-booming steel industry. Cleveland has a very high crime rate, but I would rather live there than Philly.

Any large metropolitan area is going to have its set of problems. Boston is pretty cool, but I hear traffic is just horrendous, plus you have to deal with all those funny talking, liberal commies from massachusetts 😉 (there's a simpsons reference in there). If you're not sure of your chances, think optimistically and try to find the silver lining of those big cities that you might be considering.

You're bound to be just fine in just about any city west of the mississippi or south of the mason dixon line. It gets more dicey the farther north and east you go, although I'm sure Buffalo is just fine (but effing FREEZING).

There are lots of nice cities in the US: Boston, NYC, LA, Seattle, SF, Houston, San Antonio, Memphis, Fort Lauderdale, DC

If you're looking for cities that aren't urban but slower paced yet nice, then you have lots of alternatives. Chapel Hill and Ann Arbor are both college towns that are big into sports. Long Island doesn't seem bad.

Texas is a bad place to practice! Its horrible stay away! 😎

unless you are staying away from my town. Then Texas is great!

aww I hate to hear that, I'm going to temple and looking forward to philly, but thats more just me being optimistic than anything, and I tend to be very adaptable and I'm going to have a great place to live so I'm sure I'll manage even if it does suck.

I'll throw out there though that Chapel hill is one of the most beautiful towns I've ever seen (UNC), so if you're not looking for big-city I recommend looking at it.

I'm loving all of this support for the Republic of Texas. I want to try something and see if it works via forum....ahem:

I just came from texas to check out a masters program I got accepted to. The whole San Antonio, San Marcos, Austin area is incredible. I never expected it was going to be like that. I'm sold.

Austin is amazing...I love the hill country. The city itself is great with so much to do. You'll love the food in Texas, especially the Tex-mex and beef barbecue. I grew up in Houston, and then lived in San Antonio and Austin for the past 5 years. I'm know I'm going to miss it. I'm sure someone out there will teach you what floating is all about in New Braunfels.

Nebraska and Iowa both seem very nice as far as the people go. I'm trying to compile my list even though I won't be applying this year and am having the same conflicts. UoP seems great, but I just can't bring myself to move to California.

Salt Lake City, UT is nice.... if you want to experience complete culture shock. ---oh wait, no d-school there.

Vegas is chill. Portland seems relatively calm and the climate is quite moderate.

CHI. enough said

don't forget AZ!

ASDOH is in mesa...kinda boring though. But it's reasonably nice.

Well, I'm a Kentucky girl so I'm a little biased but UK and UofL are both great schools. I like Louisville as far as cities go a little better than Lexington, but Kentucky is a fantastic state to live in!

Yes, we all wear shoes.

Good luck for out of state applicants though. You're better bet is Louisville if your not from KY.

I think it comes down to what you define as "nice". Nice for me is a smaller place with a relaxed tone. For me NYC, LA, and the other big city schools held very little appeal. Portland and Seattle were ideal from a city perspective, but also because I am from the Northwest. In my opinion, Chapel Hill is very nice in NC. I think you need to figure out what size city or a region that works for you. Where will you have support, feel comfortable, where is your family?

Also, I think it is safe to say that once dental school starts, the location of the school will be secondary to your success as apposed to if you are a good fit in the program.

Minneapolis is great and even Omaha is nice (it's nothing like the rest of NE)

Obviously nearly every city has been mentioned here, so it just depends on your preferences... pretty much everywhere will have its positives and negatives

Cleveland looks better than Philly. Btw, I have been to both places.

But, it's new to know that Cleveland has very high crime rate!

Is it true? 😱

I'm from cleveland and a lot of my friends go/went to Case Western Undergrad....I haven't heard any bad stories. Through I have heard some bad stories about the area around UMD and Temple and I don't know nearly as many people that go there.

looks peaceful. People were really nice.

I don't know about cleveland downtown, though.

Boston, Houston, New York, Ft. Lauderadale &/or Gainesville, FL...just a few that come to mind.
