My computer is infected with adware and spyware. Is there any free software I can get off the net that can prevent these programs from infecting my system in real time. Also, is CPU usage of 100% mean that all of the memory is going into running these malicious programs. Any advice is appreciated.

I use a program called Spy Sweeper. Just google it and you will find the site to get a free DL of it. It works just fine. To avoid paying for it just don't update it.

If your CPU usage is at 100% then you deffinately have a ton of stuff running the background. Spy Sweeper should clear most of that up for you. You can also check your task manager to see what is hogging up your memory. If you have Windows XP there will be a ton of stuff running. XP is a huge resource hog. A lot of that crap you do not need and can shut it down. When I am gaming I shut down everything but the "system" programs and a couple of those can go as well. You just have to figure it out. If it is an essential program then your PC will just restart.

Hope that helps. G'luck with it.

Windows Service pack 2 has pop-up window blocking already built-in as well as a bunch of security patches. Simply go Tools-->System Update and make sure your computer is connected online.

As far as anti spy-ware software goes, I tried many different programs including Ad-Aware and Spybot and now came to conclusion SpyBot is more effective than other programs.
