Does anyone have an idea of how much veterinarians who own their own practice/employ other vets make in comparison to those who work for another vet? I am not asking anyone for their personal salary, but I'm simply curious. I am most interested in mixed animal, but any figures would be greatly appreciated...thanks!

it depends on the practice and how much revenue it generates. But typically practice owners (in established practices) make 6 figures

If there are any "practice owner" averages out there, remember that mixed animal is generally at the lower end of the spectrum. Mixed animal vets tend to make below national averages, I would guess same holds true for practice owners.

That being said, I'm at a high grossing, 4 doctor, mixed animal clinic and I'm sure the practice owners are in the 6 figures. Don't think I can narrow it down any further than that though. We are well established (40+ years), in a high cost of living area, well populated area with a large clientele.

If the practice is doing well, practice owners can make twice as much as an associate (employee vet) at a practice. On the other hand, I know there are practice owners who make less, if their business is not doing well, and some who make no salary at all for years while building a practice, even though they might make a 6 figure income once the practice is established.

No joke. One vet I worked for had been trying to establish her clinic for two years when I was hired and she was in the negatives still. Last I checked, she ended up being bought out by another clinic trying to have multiple locations.
