Hi everyone!

I'm half way through my first year of medical school and I remember about this time last year (and the year before) I was in full blown panic mode. I kept asking myself "What if I never get into medical school?" "Given all the horror stories, what if I get in by the skin of my teeth and fail?"

I just want to give you all a word of encouragement because I know I could have used it this time last year. I don't know about you all, but this time last year I saw people around me get their first acceptances while hearing current medical professionals and students ranting about how terrible the life and the system is. It was pretty easy to get down and doubt myself (to say the least).

I applied for the class of '15, and I did not get in. That is my sugar coated way of saying that I was rejected by every single school I applied to-- and frankly I was devastated. Medicine has always been my passion, and I wanted to be a doctor more than anything in the world; so I picked myself up, dusted myself off, and got ready to reapply. I promised myself that I would keep improving (both my application and myself), and that I would keep reapplying until I got in no matter how long it took or who told me I would never make it (and there were plenty of people who told me I would never make it).

I'll never forget that acceptance phone call as long as I live. I want to encourage anyone who has a passion for medicine strong enough that they are willing to do any amount of work to get that M.D. (or D.O. etc). Keep bettering yourself as a person and an applicant, and never give up. I could have easily given up or half-baked a reapplication attempt after failing to get in, but I am so glad I didn't.

If you have the passion for it, medical school is the best thing in the world. Everyday you go into class, you are learning material that will help keep one of your patients/someone's mother, sister, or daughter alive or help them to have a better life.

I'd be lying if I said it was easy getting here, and I would be lying if I said it gets easy once you are here, but I can tell you with certainty that if you have the passion for it, you will have no problem getting through it, and every bit of work you put in will be worthwhile.

I wish you all the best of luck!

Sincerely,

Alex

P.s. please excuse my less than eloquent writing. I just wanted to pop in before going off to study anatomy 🙂

Thanks🙂

Well said. I think the quote at the bottom of my MDApps sums this up well:

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful people with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan "press on" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race"

When the going has been tough, I think of this and keep going. Because what else will you allow yourself to do? Good luck on your Anatomy test 😉

, you are learning material that will help keep one of your patients/someone's mother, sister, or daughter alive or help them to have a better life.

I'm gonna treat guys too though, they're the other half of the population.

..but seriously, thanks for the words of encouragement!

I suddenly have the urge to just plop my o chem textbook in front of me and just read it because I feel so motivated. It's always great to hear one of these stories when grades are bogging you down. Thanks a bunch!🙂

Many congratulations to you. I am proud of your success! Would you mind sharing what you did the 2nd time around to get in? Or what your gpa/mcat score was the 1st time?
