Oops. Still got this question wrong on AAMC after I posted Kaplan's paragraph on adaptive radiation. 😳 Here's my beef:

The finches on Galapogas Island where are all in one environment (Galapagos Island, right?!) as adaptive radiative occurred so why would a condition to produce adaptative radiation necessitate :

"a single ancestral species in several different environments"?

i think the reason they posted this was because this is a common "classic example" taught it most basic biology courses. i kind of forgot about it but i broke it down by thinking; since they mentioned darwin, it probably has to do with the "basics of evolution." nothing fancy like group, converging, etc.. so what it came down to was one species being able to adapt in a changing environment, or in the answer choices "different environment."

so what it came down to was one species being able to adapt in a changing environment

Well, your logic led me to choose the "distractor"

The incorrect answer choice was:
a single ancestral species in a rapidly changing environment

What made you not choose the distractor choice then?

The Galapogos islands are a giant archipelago... many, many little islands, many with their own little species of finches. Darwin sailed around between the islands and spotted these.

More importantly, the little islands are different microenvironments.
