Abbreviations?

i know contractions are a no-no, but are abbreviations on a PS? I mention the word gastroenterologist several times in the beginning of mine and it would save me a handful of characters to resort to GI after the first mention!

The convention is that when you first write out the word, you put the abbreviation in parenthesis next to it, so that there is no confusion for the reader. For example, "In summer 2004, I shadowed a gastroenterologist (GI) doing research...." Then you can use GI freely for the rest of the essay (though if you use it a lot, it WOULD be nice if you wrote it out once in a while, it just looks better).

just to let you know, i used contractions and still managed to get in. i have read a few books about writing that say they aren't as big of a no-no anymore. do what you will with that. i needed to use them for character limitations.
