Yesterday was my final day for my core OBGYN rotation and it was terrific. I honored my shelf exam last week and honored my evaluation. Super duper excited right now. One of the parts I would have like to be more involved in was abortions. I got to see a few D&Es, but not much else. Can a doctor specialize in late term abortions? Abortions after 24-25 weeks? I'm super interested in providing this unmet need in our society and am interested in your thoughts.

Thank you

You can specialize in that. I was trained in a center that specialized in it. Despite being a life long firm believer of pro-choice, and having personally involved in deciding to aborting one of my own offspring, watching late term abortion was still extremely traumatizing and taxing on my psyche

Basically, it's still one of the most difficult things physicians do, and there is a need for it out there.

I don't find it the least bit traumatizing. I think all women should be forced to go through counseling about the abortion services available, especially if on government healthcare.

The more abortions, the better. Pro-choice all the way.

Only a MS1, but I am interested in working in Women's Health, including abortion. Specializing only in late term abortion would be difficult because it is so rare. Most of these women have either complex medical issues or complicated trauma and legal consideration. Also, you would need to maintain licenses in multiple states.
Now working in abortion clinics in states with few options would benefit society. A few brave souls do, at great personal sacrifice.

It is rare because it is made that way. We need to quit calling it women's healthcare, that is just a facade for the reality of abortion. These clinics should read "ABORTION CLINIC" and these services referred to as abortion. Some OBs don't even ask patients if they want an abortion. Pregnancy is optional and this is malpractice in my opinion because they aren't given all the treatment options. Abortion is a treatment.

Hillary Clinton is my hero. She stood up for abortion by not providing an time frame in which it was no longer acceptable. Simply put, 25, 28, 31, 35 weeks, who cares? I'm there to provide this service for any woman that needs it.

But only this? Late term abortion is not just down because it isn't available, it is because unplanned pregnancy is down ( when access to women's health is available).
And I will always call it women's health care because abortion is only one small part of it. Birth control and prenatal care are part of the picture. These are decisions that belong in the hands of a woman and her doctor, but it has always been political.

No. Late term abortion is traumatizing, physically, and emotionally, for the patients, physicians and staff, as well as families involved. While there is obviously a need for this expertise, the more late term abortions, or even abortions we have, the more we failed people as a society.

Our effort should be focused on birth control and pervention of unwanted pregnancies, not having more abortions.

In fact, the later termination is, the riskier it is.

I do not believe termination should be offered to every pregnant woman either. Most of pregnancies are wanted. It would be extremely inappropriate to offer termination "as an option" to a couple who have been trying for years and who just got pregnant. I seem to get the vibe that if you become an OB, you are going to put that on the table for every pregnancy you come across. This will lead to a fast termination of your own job.

I personally find the "I want to abort more babies so I am going into OB" idea an red flag.

Lastly, please don't drag politics into this discussion. Just because you supported a certain politicians doesn't mean all those who are prochoice supports her and it's best to keep individual politicians out of this. Discuss the policy (pro choice) not individuals.

I was just scrolling down the home page and this thread immediately stood out. The OPs picture and post scream "troll". It seems clear that overall health is not a priority to the op. I have a feeling this won't be a thread much longer.

This is an obvious troll, but on the off chance that it's not, I just want to say that the OP and people like him/her sicken me. @DrfluffyMD hit the nail on the head; it should be humanity's goal to bring about a society where abortion never needs to occur in the first place.

Personally, I take it a step further and say that abortion is immoral outside the setting of absolute medical necessity. That's just me though.

Someone please lock this thread now.

Indeed, a disgusting human being. I'd like to add that abortion is never really necessary. There are better ways to deal with the unwanted pregnancy/child.

This thread disgusts me.

Yes, and yet it is the reality of Planned Parenthood and many who advocate so hard for abortion. Have you ever seen the interviews from former PP employees? These disgusting places have abortion quota to meet, its about money. More dead babies is more money. Plain and simple. Remember the PP video clips where there was laughter and a disgustingly cavalier attitude? I do, but all the media did was focus these videos being captured illegally.

my opinion is that once a fetus is viable abortion should be off the table other than for severe chromosomal defects or in case of danger to maternal health. If there is a danger to maternal health then baby should be delivered live. If mother dosent want anything to do with baby there are many couples
(including us) that will gladly adopt the child .

Why do chromosomal defects allow us to decide that life isn't worthy of the chance at life? Are children with down syndrome not worthy of life? At 12 weeks terminating is ok, but not at 20.

I agree with the overall sentiment of your question. We are expecting our first baby. My wife had to go to her last appointment on her own, unfortunately.

She was offered genetic testing at 20 weeks and she declined. No way we are aborting our baby after 20 weeks and after feeling her kicking the womb and seeing her move on ultrasound. She even has a name already! Babies with Down syndrome often go on to lead fulfilling lives and provide their families with love and joy.

I'm proud of my wife's decision.

Anyway, sorry for the personal story.

Nothing to be sorry about. These are the stories people need to hear. Down Syndrome is not grave illness. I wonder what the future holds and how scary things may become. What if in the future, through prenatal testing, we can determine the IQ of children? Imagine the increased loss of innocent life because a child isn't smart enough. When will it end?

Why Down syndrome in Iceland has almost disappeared - CBS News

The fake news CBS story talks about Down Syndrome disappearing, well yes, because they have been terminated. How is this different than the attempted extermination of Jews by the Nazi's.

But the reality is a lot of babies don't get adopted, no matter how warm and caring you and your wife may be. And physicians always have a duty to notify their patients on all reasonable treatment options.

Either way, OP is an obvious troll
