I was wondering if anyone from last year's match could tell me how long most programs wait until they send rejections out. Basically, do most tend to string you along for months when they already invited their first batch to interview? I ask b/c I am part of a couples match and although it is a bummer to get a rejection, it is much easier for us to just know. I saw somewhere on here that someone never ended up getting a yes or no from like 10 schools. Is this the norm?

Thanks!

Speaking from my own experience when I applied a couple years ago, some programs would send rejections right away, some would wait, many wouldn't bother sending anything.

Perhaps others could confirm my experience, but I also applied to some medicine programs as a backup, and found that they were much quicker to respond than the Rad-Onc programs. In fact, I had precisely 1 interview in Rad-Onc prior to Jan. 1, and precisely 1 Medicine interview after Jan. 1. I was still getting interview offers after Jan. 1. I still matched.

Thanks - I'll hold out some hope for my non-responding programs!👍

Can we assume that if we get an interview offer well after all invitations had gone out that someone gave up their interview position? I would assume that if this is the case, you automatically are looked upon less favorably and are going into the interview at a disadvantage. Can anybody comment?

Well, if it is a big program, some of those do give interviews out in waves (ex: Harvard, Michigan) based on other things than just their interest level. But many smaller programs do offer interviews to fill spots after other applicants cancel. I would take the interview and not get too discouraged; the decision of who to invite and who not to invite can be shockingly arbitrary at times. You probably have just as good a CV as the first "tier" interviews. Our program got 200 applications; good people slip through. They would not invite you if they weren't interested at all. Trust me...the candidates are just too good for that. Also, no one will remember how/when you were invited when it comes time for the actual interview.

Just so I don't cause confusion - when I said I had exactly 1 interview before Jan.1, I meant that I had actually taken 1 interview. I received more than 1 interview offer prior to Jan. 1. Sorry about that.
