Hi everyone,

i'd love to hear any thought/advise anyone may have for me to help me make this decision.
i'm finishing my thrid year of medschool and may be choosing b/n two research opportunities. both basic science.
one is neuro but i have a very good chance of getting published. the other is retina but chances are not that good for publication. neither has any academic connections to an ophtho program.
which do you think would be more helpful when applying-
neuro w/pub Vs. ophth w/o pub?

thanks everyone and happy holidays 🙂

I think, you should choose whichever helps you get the strongest Letter of Rec..., which in my humble opinion comes from an Ophthalmologist...besides you'll get a better grasp of the specialty.

I would agree with the poster above.

While getting published is nice, PD's like to see that you have decided on your desired specialty and are getting some work/research in that area. Ophtho research at the end of your 3rd year would be a great idea!

Even if you don't get published, if you can work hard and impress someone there, perhaps you'll be able to get a solid letter of recommendation. I think that would count more than a measly publication in a different field. (If you are considering a residency in neuro, then I would recommend the neuro project obviously)

thanks for the advise guys!

definately taking into consideration espescially i think i would enjoy the retina research more than the neuro one.

only issue is that the retina research is being done by phd neuroscientist who looks at how vision gets transmitted to electical impulses. sorry i forgot to mention that before.

thanks again for the advise
