Hi everyone! this is my first time posting on here. I need some advice because im a little lost on what to do. So my situation is a bit complicated, but heres the short version of it. I was admitted to university of missouri CVM in 2024, and got dismissed this spring in my 3rd IP of vet school. Ive had some major family issues going on since fall of last year, so basically when i started vet school. I was offered to decelerate, but it didnt make sense at the time because they would have had me drop the classes i was passing. I chose to try and suck it up and push through. obviously that didnt work since im writing this post. My CUM GPA is still pretty fine at 3.2, and i have a pretty decent application with good rec letters. My question is should i go ahead and reapply to schools this year? Im doing an accelerated Masters during this unexpected gap, so im going to be taking graduate level classes at basically the same course load as vet school. This will hopefully prove that i can handle the course load if readmitted. Additionally, i was told by the dean of MU that if i could prove myself in a masters program i would be given a seat in the class of 2030 next year. So if all else fails i have a seat at MU. Honestly tho im not sure i want to go back there. obviously if its my only choice i will, but im not really impressed with the program and many of their good professors are leaving. In general ive just heard a lot of bad things about MU and I didnt really feel supported as a student who was struggling. I was dismissed over being 0.5% away from a passing grade in one class, and despite me showing them proof of everything going on in my personal life they would not do anything to help me, not even letting me start over from the beginning. Should i apply to other schools this cycle or do my masters first, then see what happens next year with MU?

Imo I would be hard pressed to go somewhere else assuming that spot is guaranteed. Why are you "not impressed"? Ultimately it's an avma accredited program and at the end of the day you'll have a dvm like anyone else from any other school.

I hate to say it but profs are moving all the time and I wouldn't consider it a major factor. All the schools are struggling to retain good faculty.

Yes it sucks you got dismissed over such a small percentage. Ultimately though it seems like that is the schools rules for failing and unfortunately it is what it is and every school is different in their policies regarding this situation. They (all schools) have to draw the line somewhere and unfortunately there's usually no bending because if they bend to one at what point do they stop bending and making exceptions?

It's easy to get in a negative head space in this situation and it seems that mentality has definitely creeped in some.

You say they did nothing to help you- I encourage some introspection in this aspect. They did offer you an option out which you chose not to take. Did you seek out all of your resources? Did you go to counseling services? Did you reach out consistently to faculty in your struggling subjects?

I know mizzou has a steal for tuition which is another reason to consider staying. Also there is no guarantee you would get in anywhere else and spending all that time, effort, and $ to get no where.

Tagging @battie who remediated for her input

Regardless of your decision I wish you the best of luck because it's a sucky situation to be in and I hope things get better for you soon.🤞

Commenting so that I don't forget to come back here tomorrow during Baby Bat's nap time. But I was academically dismissed after first year after missing the cut off by 0.5% as well and repeated first year. I just got home early from a late swing, so want to take advantage of the extra sleep time.

No offense but you've been academically dismissed. Even if it was over family matters, I think other admissions panels will struggle with that. I wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. Take the option you're given to get through school with the least debt possible and start jumping through hoops.

Okay, I've had my nap. Here's my background:

I was originally in the class of 2020 at Illinois. We're somewhat unique with the mega courses, so we only have 1 grade per quarter for a total of 9 didactic grades. By the end of the 2016-2017 year, I missed the cut off by 0.5%. The only option through Illinois is to remediate the whole year that you've failed depending on what the vet med academic committee decides following your discussion with the academic dean and your letter to the committee. They do take extenuating circumstances into account. I very nearly didn't pass second year (2018-2019 school year) because my younger sister died 2.5 weeks into the school year. They originally offered for me to repeat second year or fail out completely since I had repeated. The dean discussed with them my circumstances and they allowed me to continue on with the class of 2021 with stipulations.

Obviously things worked out for me. I graduated in 2021 and have been successful since. However, I had to play within the confines of the rules.

My question is should i go ahead and reapply to schools this year?

It's your money and your time. You will have to report going to Mizzou and supply your transcripts. When they see that, they have basically two options: 1) throwing you straight to the bin or 2) calling Mizzou and being like, "I have this student I want to discuss." There's no way they don't contact Mizzou about you. So be prepared for that.

Also be prepared for schools not willing to take the risk on you. If your home school is not willing to take the risk, why should someone else?

Additionally, i was told by the dean of MU that if i could prove myself in a masters program i would be given a seat in the class of 2030 next year.

I mean. There are literally 4000+ students (dismissed veterinary students and pre-vets that would not-quite-literally kill for a guaranteed seat if they did well in a masters program. As a dismissed student, this is the opportunity of a life time.

many of their good professors are leaving.

Yeah. That's what happens when you're paid half in academia what you could be paid in private practice for a lot less politics and weird ancillary responsibilities found nowhere else. Academia everywhere is hemorrhaging good talent because paying someone 120-150k as a specialist to work 50-60 hours a week is trash. Not to mention there literally aren't enough specialists to teach students in all these schools. They're trying to increase the school numbers by 20% in the next 5-10 years (assuming no schools close).

I didnt really feel supported as a student who was struggling.

Serious question as someone who truly failed out once and almost a second time: when and how did you ask for help? That's rhetorical and I'm not expecting an answer. It's something for you to consider yourself.

I get ***a lot*** of flack for asking students this question when students discuss how unsupported they feel. But these schools cannot be psychic and know how 100% or their students are feeling 100% of the time. If they don't know you're struggling, there's nothing they can do. And to a certain extent, there's a level of personal responsibility to ask for help.

Now, predicated on what you communicated with the school, what help *did* they provide? It sounds like they offered what is their standard poor academic performance plan, which I imagine is a legal beagle thing. What else did you request or they do?

was dismissed over being 0.5% away from a passing grade in one class

Me too. Cut offs exist for a reason through out life.

Considering how competitive vet school is....applying to and getting into another school would be a total hail mary. Places are going to see academic dismissal and nope right out of there. Even if, IF for some reason they decided to read into it more, are they going to have the time or inclination to call your dean to discuss you, out of all the other hundreds of applicants without that baggage? And even IF they had the time to do so, would your Dean do a good job at convincing them? And even IF your dean or whoever they talked to defended you, would they really take that much of a chance on someone with that record at the end of the day? That is a lot of "ifs". You would already be at a massive disadvantage due to that incident - do you really want to try to catch that bird when you have two basically in the bush?

No. Do well in your Master's program. If you need academic counseling or therapy , start going (if these family issues are ongoing, you are going to need help developing good coping mechanisms - you don't need to go it alone, that's what counseling and therapy are for). If you have a guaranteed seat to come back to, get it and take it, for the love of god. Don't be stupid.

One of my vet school classmates did fail out (this was almost 15 years ago now) and a year or two later was accepted/successfully completed school at Ross and now practices as a veterinarian. So it’s no unprecedented to get it somewhere else after an academic dismissal, but it’s probably unlikely for aforementioned reasons and I’d take the sure thing if that has been offered to you and you still want to pursue a career in this industry. Especially when costs at mizzou are likely lower than most other schools. I’ve been at a couple schools now and they’re more alike than not.
