Hi there.

I got in and started at a pharmacy school in 2010. During the summer before I started, I had some family issues I had to deal with, which continued throughout my first semester, leading to my grades not being the greatest, leading ultimately to my academic dismissal. It has been a pretty hard year for me reflecting on what happened. I am currently taking some more prerequisite classes and planning on reapplying to pharmacy school again to start in 2012. I am also taking the PCAT again in January. I guess my question is does anybody know of any situations that students have been admitted to pharmacy school like this? I plan on being completely honest with schools about the situation, providing I get the chance to. Please no negativity, it's been hard enough on me. GPA before pharmacy school was about 3.2 and PCAT had room for improvement. I need to find schools that will give me the second chance I deserve. If anyone has (positive) advice, please let me know.

Thank you very much.

I think the big thing to show the schools, especially in the personal statement, is that you have grown and matured from your experience.

Whether it was financial troubles, mental stress from a personal loss, or even a mental breakdown, pharmacists should know the toll it can take on the human body and mind and be understanding. I am sure that there was a justified reason why you were struggling and I am not judging, mind you, but the responsible adult decision was to withdraw from school and take a semester or a year off to deal with the situation instead of trying to force yourself through unnecessary hardship. No one judges you for taking time off of school to handle the responsibilities of life - but they are prone to judging you for failing to make good decisions (something a pharmacist should be expected to do).

So, it is important to show that your decision making has improved drastically. I am not sure how you show that since your struggles started very recently and not much time has passed since, but that would be my best advice coming from someone who knows what you're going through.

Did you burn bridges with the pharmacy school you attended? We've had a few people drop for medical reasons, but they went on "leave of absence," so their situation is different. I would contact the school you attended first and see what they say about your coming back before trying to reapply elsewhere.

Hey there, I remember your posts during the application process a few years ago.

I think that you can definitely get accepted to another pharmacy school. However, I would focus on getting a Bachelor's degree, improving your PCAT, and potentially applying to some of the schools that you applied to previously. Given that you took mostly pre-reqs during your first application process, you'll have to take upper level science classes to show that you can handle the material to show that your poor performance was due to extenuating circumstances versus your academic ability.

No academic advice...

Remember that life is a race run against yourself. Deal with consequences as they come, but realize that you did the best you could & learned from the experience.

Be kind to yourself!

I am in the same boat and I just found out TODAY!!! After years of financial debt, my school has decided to dismiss me after I appealed for a 6 week extension. My question is, when we reapply, do we need to tell the schools that we been through a program and was dismissed?

Very easy answer ... YES! I don't know how they wouldn't know that you were dismissed from a program because you will have to send your transcript to the school to which you are applying.

Your school did not allow remediation? I can only assume that you had more than one "bad" grade. Personally, I don't know of students who have been readmitted after being dismissed. Your best bet is to contact the school and see what you can do to be readmitted. Either way, you will need to let the pharmacy schools you intend to apply to that you were dismissed from another pharmacy school; I believe it asks about that on the PharmCAS but it has been a while since I have seen it.

I suppose you could try to attend an "academic forgiveness" school like USN.

Did you tell any of your professors about your situation prior to being dismissed?

I know of one classmate who was expelled and allowed to return when her life situation changed. Extenuating circumstances, etc. It worked out OK for her. I have no idea if another COP would have taken her if she couldn't come back here.

Good Luck.

Hi,

Yes I have had more than one bad grade but this time, it was due to a badevaluation from a preceptor. [FONT=&#23435]It was not for lack of didactic knowledgeor bad patient service. In fact, I provided good patient service. It wasactually from biased opinions and many misconceptions. He accused me of usingmy laptop to surf the internet and constantly using my cell phone. I brought inmy cell phone bill to show the school but they still sided with the preceptor. Icompleted the didactic portion of the program and I was actually on rotationsbefore I was dismissed. I went through the appeal process so [FONT=&#23435]i.twas discussed among the professors. Our school's appeals committee strictlyfollows their polic[FONT=&#23435]y. and rarely rules in favor of the student.[FONT=&#23435] The assistantdean of my school understood my conflicts with the preceptor pretty well andtried his best to help me out. However, he cannot change the school’s policy noroverride the appeals committee’s decision. ..

Yes, I did have a medical extenuating circumstance and ironically, their rationale to dismiss me is based on the extenuating circumstance.

I thought it was based on the bad grade? I'm lost.

I was referring to startingover saying first that s/he had more than one bad grade and then something about there being a medical reason.

Mods:

I think that it may be best to separate startingover's comments from Moni's thread because the replies are getting confusing and they are two incredibly different situation. I don't know if it's possible, but it could be kosher for clarity sake. 🙂

You're right about that, but I wouldn't even be sure of which responses to put where

So to answer you question, I have had medical reasons in the past which resulted in some bad grades. However, I made it all the way to rotations and it is because of the fail in this rotation that lowered my GPA to below the minium which caused the dismissal
