I am interested in pursuing a career in responding and researching in the field of disaster response.

I want to be able to contribute to academia, while maintaining clinical responsibilities at a hospital (I will be a clinician). Or any other general advice for someone starting down this path.

So my question is
A) what type of organizations/institutes would you suggest working with in order to begin to build experience in humanitarian response?

B) What are the main academic centers for research in humanitarian response? (I am aware of the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative and the Hopkins Refugee and Disaster response center)

C) Does anyone have any information about the type of work being completed at Vandy's Global Health Institute?

Thanks so much

Hi Newt,

A) Medecins Sans Frontieres, The Department of Health & Human Services, World Health Organization, UNICEF. These are just four of many. You should have no issue finding a humanitarian aid/response organization who could use your help and expertise (I'm assuming you are a resident DO or MD, but I realize that could be a poor assumption).

Good luck with all your future pursuits!

Thanks Grabes!

I am actually a med student. So I am more interested in getting involved in public health work with a group doing research in conflict areas.

I'm not sure how to get involved in this
