Hey guys,

I have a quick but very serious question. In my first year of undergrad a partner an I worked on a bonus flow chart together and submitted the same document. This resulted in us being deemd academically mishonest and got a 0 on that bonus assignmetn a 2.5% grade taken off our final grade. The dean dealing with our case said a note was put in our file stating that we are on disciplinary probation until we graduate. The university policy states that "A note that the student has been placed on disciplinary probation shall be placed in the student’s file by the Associate Dean, but will not appear on grade reports and transcripts; the note will be removed when the student completes her/his degree requirements."

I graduated two years ago and when applying on my AADSAS this cycle I didnt think to report it. The dental school I got accepted to is asking me to send a "Dean of Students Evaluation" where it specifically asks if the applicant has been disciplined by the school for academic misconduct such as cheating.

Ive called my dean and left a voicemail and im basically just freaking out. Do you think he will report a yes or is the note out of my file and im okay. If he does report it will i most likely get my acceptance rescinded? 😱

Most places will take into account the severity of the situation. If they ask you about it, be honest and sincere about what happened. That's the best you can do.

Yea can't do anything about it now. Submit it & hope for the best

So I called my UG school and they said they would have to report it...so now what should I do? Call the dental school and explain how small of an incident it was that I thought it was so minor and forgot to include it on my aadsas? Is my acceptance most likely going to be revoked due to me neglecting to disclose this 100%??? 🙁

Someone I knew who wasn't forthright about this got retroactively rejected.

Probably not...I would call the dental school and let them know what happened. Be honest and apologize first before they get word from your dean. Tell them it was so minor that you forgot...good luck

i was put on probation due to my low GPA when i was a freshman
is this also something that I have to report when filling out application 🙁?

Yes.

I was put on probation because I didn't finish a minimum course load as a freshman first semester (not because of the grades I got). This is also something I will have to report.

Well, U didn't report it despite U knowing about it & honestly that is grounds for a rejection if you strictly follow the rules. It would be a wise move on your part to explain the exact severity/lack of the probation 2 the school

The best thing you can do is be proactive about telling the schools what happened and be completely honest about it. I'm sure there have been people in the past to get into Dschool with some type of academic misconduct.

Good luck, I personally think you will be fine

Thanks for the input and I agree. However, i am not worried about what happened, it was so minor and dealt with informally. I am more worried about the fact that I did not report it on my aadsas and it specifically says on there that failure to report it may jeopardize your applciation. It was just so minor and small and SO long ago that I didnt even think about it! 😕 Do you think not reporting it and now it being reported by my undergrad school will cause issues?

ok, what exactly happened when you were found with the misconduct? your professor found out u turned in the same paper. and then what? did they just tuck it away into a file in their office or was it reported to the dean? did you meet with a dean? if you met with a dean about your misconduct, im not sure how minor that is. if it was kept between you and the professor, i guess that is minor and one would forget about that. although if you were explicitly TOLD by a DEAN that you are on academic probation until graduation......thats not really too minor imo?
also if this is expurged from your record then how can your dean report it?

He said it was excessive collaboration so we got docked the marks and put on probation until we graduated. After that it leaves our file. Never met with the dean, it was the assistant or acting dean I believe, but he was the one who decided what the penalty would be and relayed that to us.

You seem to be in pretty deep denial.
1. You were involved in cheating
2. The misconduct was very formal
3. You were well aware of how it was handled
4. You failed to follow up to see that the report was in your transcript/documents
5. You failed to report it on the AADSAS
6. Two years not "SO long ago"

Well, if the school is reporting it to your D-school, I would not consider it a minor matter. There's really nothing you can do but damage control now. You should be proactive and report it to your school first if you're absolutely sure your undergrad is going to snitch on you. Otherwise, it will look like you're trying to hide something and they will reject you for lying on your application.

Only thing you can do is beg for forgiveness and tell them how it completely slipped your mind and hope they believe you. So, give them the puppy dog eyes and tell them what happened.

Or you can go to your undergrad and tell them snitches get stitches lol.

I have reported it to my dental school, just waiting for a reply now. What do you mean snitches get snitches? 😕

It was 7 years ago, not 2. It was just a bonus assignment so I took the "no marks" with a grain of salt and forgot about it. It was only recently that I looked up the exact stipulations and realized it could be an issue. I am not in denial, I just needed advice on damage control and whether this is something that will be detrimental to my acceptance/dental school.

Lol nvm. Forget about last part, I'll edit it out. It was a bad joke at the wrong time. But yeah, nothing you can do but damage control if you're absolutely sure the school is going to report you. And yeah, this could be detrimental to your acceptance to your school if the ADCOM's believe you were deliberately trying to hide it.

Snitches get STITCHES is a threat which you should tell your school so they know how serious you are if they plan on snitching.

i dont understand how if its been expunged from your file since youve graduated, ie its not on file, how and why is your school reporting it? how do they even know or remember, if its not on your file.
why is the dean reporting this

When I called the acting dean from the time he said they are required to keep our records for a few years after we graduate. I feel like it wouldn't have been in the files and therefore not have been reported had I not mentioned it but I figured its better to be safe than sorry. So he has said that the dental school asked if misconduct ever occurred, and he is aware that it has and therefore is obliged to report it.

I don't understand a few things here.

1: If he is your lab partner, shouldn't you guys have the same results so how is it cheating?

2: If it was reported to the dean then it is a big deal! how could you not put it in into your application

Cheating is rampant in under-grad. That is usually why I value DAT results much more than GPAs. Also, word of advice cheating happens in dental school as well, which I think is really sad. It simply shows a lack of character. I knew someone who bragged about it on their facebook. Even worse, they had a family member give them praise for beating the "system". Sadly, I think the worst problem with dental school right now is just nepotism.

Will this affect your application? Duh of course it will. I would contact the dean of the dental school ASAP and explain the situation. Other than that there is little you can do so I would try not to kill yourself worrying about it.

You graduated 2 years ago and it certainly should have been "fresh" in your mind. As to your second question- you will find out soon enough.
