So when I was 18 (around 13 years ago) I decided to be a big girl and go out of state for college, where I proceeded straight into epic fail land. An F in Gen Chem 1, and an F in College Algebra. No, I didn't drop them because in my baby brain, not going=dropping. Duh. 🙁
Since then however, I have retaken said classes and done well. But because of that F in chem (13 @#$% years ago), my science GPA is too low for admission to a PA program.
Does anyone have any experience with academic petitions to replace F's with W's way (waaaayy) after the fact? I just can't believe that a mistake I made 13 years ago could still be punishing me. I just want to get into PA school! Help!

well you could keep taking classes to dilute the f's.

Maybe the caribbean offers PA programs? I know they have vet now.

You can't just make the f's disappear.

I've seen such petitions succeed where there are severe extenuating factors, like illness, dealth of family members, etc, when documentation is available.

There's another way to get around the problem: You might consider whether you'd have an interest in applying to DO med schools, which have a grade forgiveness policy.

Each class that one retakes must have the same credit hours as the original course, or greater. The retake need not be at the same school. The course name needn't be identical so long as the course content is demonstrably similar per the course catalogs.

When one retakes, only the most recent grade is included in the calculation of your application GPA by AACOMAS, the application service

How many classes factor into your SGPA for PA schools?

I find it hard to believe that one F(your post says that it is the Chemistry F that is hurting you, so I am assuming the school isn't counting math in the sGPA) is the only problem with your transcript. What are the rest of your grades like?

I'm taking Chem 2 right now (getting an A), and I still have to do Organic Chem and MicroB. B's in Bio and A&P. I have a C in Chem 1. See why the F sinks me? My cumulative (non-science) GPA is a 3.7. I have two years of HCE, and plan on having at least 200 hours of volunteer/shadow time. I know schools look at more than just the GPA, but if the science GPA isn't a 3.0, I'm afraid they won't even look at me.

But would your cum gpa still be 3.7 without a grade replacement? They will still count the f's in your final gpa calculation.

Hey guys! First post on SDN ever! Anyhoo...Here in Texas, we have Academic Fresh Start. You can drop classes from your transcripts that are more than ten years old. Does your state have that, maybe?

No offense, but the grades are so old and I am sure they will consider the as significant as your newer grades, and you probably will have to discuss the F in your interview(s).

JUST KEEP AN UPWARD TREND.

but if it keeps her sGPA under 3.0 and program guidelines require at least a 3.0 for matriculation - I doubt they would take her when other candidates have 3.4+. Last time I checked, PA schools weren't pleading for applicants.

I'm sure they would take her if it was either her or no-one. But they get plenty of applicants.

That's what I'm saying. I would love the opportunity to explain the F, but the GPA needs to be a 3.0 for them to even look at my app. Academic Fresh Start would have been awesome, but do any Texas grad schools actually do that? I could take chem 1 over again, but would it matter?

can you do some boosting?

Take a semester of easy classes that will count? All depends on the institution for which classes to take (easy bio, easy chem, astronomy, whatevers available that's easy)

What many credit hours of A would you need to break 3.0? Its easiest to determine this from an excel spreadsheet.

I wouldn't take anything you would get a non A/A- in (for BCPM science courses).
