Firstly, I'd like to tell all of you that doubted me back when I was a premed that I am currently an MS1 at a TOP TEN IVY LEAGUE medical school. So much for me being too "stupid" and "immature" to be a doctor.

Ok, so I came back to you guys for a little bit of advice. I did alright in undergrad through all of my prereqs, and studied hard for the MCAT and got a pretty good score, but now I'm having a really hard time with my basic sciences classes. I'm failing anatomy and histology 🙁. They put me on academic probation and I'm afraid that I may not make it 🙁🙁🙁🙁

Firstly, I would like some study tips for getting through these tough classes. I never took any advanced sciences in undergrad so any of you premeds or current medical students that got through these challenging classes may be able to offer me a little bit of advice.

Secondly, if my school ends up dismissing me, would I have any grounds for legal action on the statement that they weren't providing me with sufficient instruction and/or remedial help? I've been kind of getting trouble from day one, when I was told in anatomy lab that my nails were too long, and they made me go get a manicure like the next day after I already got one 🙁 . Since then I feel like they sort of have been looking down on me. Do I need to document this now?

Lastly, in the unfortunate situation where I do end up getting dismissed, would I have any luck getting into a foreign medical school? I mean, I have ok grades and a pretty decent MCAT score, so would they refuse to accept me if I get dismissed from a US school?

I'd really appreciate some encouragement and advice on this matter. It's been bothering me all week and it kinda ruined my Thanksgiving. Everyone was asking me why I'm so sad and I was scared to tell them about what's happening to me. I mean, I'm doing awesome in my intoduction to clinical medicine classes, and all of my preceptors are always complimenting me, but I just seem to be having trouble with the advanced sciences. They're way harder than biology and chemistry 🙁 . What should I do?

TL;DR, but if you're failing med school doesn't that make you immature and stupid?

What should I do?

a) I love this attitude. Grounds for legal action? You just perpetuate the American-litigation happy stereotype the rest of the world has. *How dare I take personal responsibility for anything when I can sue others and blame them!!! 🙄

b) what should you do? Stop posting trollish threads on the PREMED section of SDN and start acting like the supposed "mature and competent" doctor you're supposed to be. Because you know, you're at the big fancy TOP TEN IVEY LEAGUE MEDICAL SCHOOL 🙄

well, it could be worse. You could be on "double secret probation"

Reading your post made my head hurt... seriously.

Oh don't start all that stupid stuff again. I just want some advice🙁

please?🙁

you cant ask premeds for med school studying advice cuz the way we study now is totally different than the way you should be studying in med school.

Well I always used flashcards to study as an undergrad and it helped a lot. I was just wondering if anyone has some different effective methods?

Well the hardest class i took at my undergrad instit was CELL BIO 301. Our teacher lectured about a half a chapter per lecture and each test(2) had about 15 chapters (>300pages) on it. Usually I would read the chapter and circle key words. Then I would go to lecture and take notes on the power points he handed out. Then I would go back to the book and make concept maps with the key words I circled in the text. This class was difficult because each test had 6 essays on top of 25 MC. If the test was simply multiple choice i wouldnt have studied as hard. I find that for MC tests I simply familiarize myself with key words and concepts as opposed to memorize them. That's about the best studying advice i can give

Thank you🙂

I never really use my texts unless there's a specific page number cited in the powerpoints. Perhaps I'll start relying on them a bit more.

I don't understand how you can get into an IVY med school and not be able to handle anatomy. One day I was bored while volunteering and memorized all the superficial muscles of the face and I still remember them

I am assuming you learn different muscle sections at a time, read them out loud and keep repeating them. Learn three at a time, keep learning, and keep doing total reviews of all your knowledge, constantly quizzing yourself.

With that being said is this ops post a joke or something? 👎 How are people here supposed to know how to help you out? Everybody has different study habits...!

An internal med doctor told me that you need to know the muscles point of origin and action for med school anatomy exams...is that true?

I kind of do that. Like i'll put quiz questions on my flashcards and write the answer on the back. I wish that the important stuff for the test was emphasized more in the powerpoints.

I was just posting somewhere else about this. Try bridging concepts and drawing relationships while you read the material. It gives you more to rely on when your memory fails. If you think you're a very visual learner, draw a concept map, pictures and all until you're sick of it. Truthfully, I don't know how med school exams are, but use the school's advice.

Thank you🙂

Well I always use the texts as a reference, and I rely primarily on the power points and lecture topics as study guide. Like i said before, the only time i read the text is the morning or night before class so that i can pay better attention and take better notes. Other than that, I dont usually go to the test unless I have a question on the slides(much like you). But I do find circling key words and making concept maps very helpful for classes like CELL BIO. I took undergrad A&P and for that I simply just memorized everything, and when i took Biochem i outlined the chapters with all the mechanisms and their components. There is no single way to study for a every class. You just have to learn to adapt. The way i studied for MATH, ORGO, BIO, PHYSICS, HISTORY are all different. Just adapt and find out what is most efficient.

why is this in pre-allopathic. and cheerchick, i believe in you. sometimes i think you are the only thing sane in this insane world

GZA...is your name an abbreviation for gyoza? I love gyoza. I always order it as my appetizer when I get sushi😍

Hey Cheerchick. I might be able to help ya, cause I was in a similar situation last year. I was taking molecular genetics, cell bio, and biochemistry II and was really behind on all of them, getting low scores, the whole deal. So, I studied and studied using flashcards and my notes, but just didn't feel like I was getting anything out of it. I eventually just pulled an all-nighter and got up enough confidence to take the test comfortably, but then I realized I let my roommate borrow my car and my test was in half an hour, and campus was about 15 minutes away! I whistled for a cab and when it came near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I can say this cab is rare, but I thought 'Now forget it. Yo homes, to Bel Air!". I pulled up to the house about 7 or 8 and I yelled to the cabbie "Yo homes smell ya later!". I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the Prince of Bel Air.

Hope this helps!

But when I pull an all nighter I can't concentrate the next day and my eyes look all baggy 🙁

So this is one of dem Trolls I keep hearing 'bout right?

If not just sleep with the test proctor, you'll get an A and get your beauty rest, oh and you'll be really relaxed too, or atleast he/she will.

the only time an all-nighter works is if you take adderall. Without it, i need at least 5-6 hours of sleep in order to retain the info. With that said, i am strongly against non prescribed adderall use as a study aid. I feel that it is no different than steroids for your brain, and although it may give you an intellectual advantage, there are many side affects and consequences that follow.

Not to be uber rude, but your "guys can be such *****s" thread in the lounge is classic troll.

Ok, so I came back to you guys for a little bit of advice.

Sounds like something you'd see someone in a sitcom telling their parents.

Anyway, just do better and you will be fine. Study more or ... whatever. Don't worry kiddo keep your head up!!!!!!!! 👍👍👍

 Are you just bored during your break? Seriously, if I had any inclination to help you, this would've killed it instantly. So am I really supposed to believe that you're asking a bunch of pre-meds for advice on how to get through med school? This post is just bursting with wholesome trolly goodness!

I give it about a 2/10 for believability and about a 6/10 for humor (the GZA/gyoza comment did make me chuckle).

You know, I initially laughed when I read your post. But then I got to thinking: either this is a joke and your handle and all your posts are just being put up by someone who's looking for a laugh at all the responses or you are really a girl, found the handle of "CheerChickMD69" to be cute, and this is a serious post.

The former situation isn't really funny because the element of humor here is that the post is serious. The latter situation is just sad. Sad for you, sad for the medical school in which you are enrolled, and ultimately very sad for the general public you could potentially serve.

tsk tsk. Some people drank just a little too much hatorade tonight.

But to everyone that's giving me great advice I really appreciate it🙂

I forgot to add something

Check out some of OP's previous posts in the lounge.

It pertains to the same content of a recent Nip/Tuck episode where sex is defined.

please do see a psychologist, psychiatrist, therapist, or counselor though. that's serious advice.

i disagree, a good old fashioned prostitute should do just fine.

Hey guess what? I do see a psychologist every two weeks, and he thinks that all of my concerns are perfectly valid.
