I came across this page while looking at resident salaries. Are these numbers take home pay? Or does this number include grant money or gross billings? If you go to page 2 there is a Family practice guy making $375K. If this is net pay, I want to be in academics in Utah.

Yeah maybe but the trade-off is you have to live in Utah.

I used to think the same thing until I moved to Utah. I have never lived in an area where you are so close to great skiing, mountain biking, hiking, canyoneering, etc. If you love the outdoors this is one great place to be.

"Take home pay" is a concept for jobs that don't require a college degree. You should not think about a compensation package in those terms. An enormous number of things can effect your tax bill at MD pay levels.

That said, the numbers there could represent gross pay, although it might represent the total value of salary and benefits (retirement, health insurance, etc.) It certainly does not include malpractice which is paid by the employer.

just as a note, the guy that you are referencing appears to be exec. medical director of the community clinics and chair of FP based on his profile. http://medicine.utah.edu/dfpm/AboutUs/faculty/magill.htm

The extra admin duties that probably are equivalent to a chief of staff of the hospital or cancer center director are probably what bump his salary up.
