Hi. I'm new to the forum, and I wonder if anyone knows of any medical/osteopathic schools that currently offer an accelerated course of study (i.e., shorter than four years) toward an M.D. or a D.O.

But to answer your question, no I don't know if any exist. If I had to venture a guess, I would say probably none in the US.

No. Just no. Unless you are fresh out of high school and have been accepted to a BA(S?)/MD(or DO) program, it will take you 4 years.

I nearly said something like this. In the 6 months I've been in med school and 2 years in grad school, the only conclusion I can draw is that 4 years isn't enough time to teach all that is really important.

I think there is a new Texas Tech program out there, with 3 years of med school, no summer vacations. But it is geared mainly at people wanting to go into primary med.

I had forgotten about this and LECOM's program, but it seems too risky to bank on 3 years of med school if you aren't absolutely, positively, without a doubt, for sure going to be in primary care. What if you get to school and discover that continuity care isn't your thing? Or you really like neurosurgery or derm? It doesn't seem wise to pick a school solely because they'll get you out in 3 years unless you know PC is what you want to do.

If you mean for a typical 4 year school then I'll give mine as an example. Between 1st/2nd year I had 8 weeks. 2nd/3rd year varies depending on when you take Step I (I'm taking mine somewhat early, so I'll have a little more time off than someone who is waiting until late June). Then no vacation 3rd/4th year.

My program and the others that I have looked at typically give you the summer between M1 and M2 off as a traditional summer. After that, you have to take Step I and many folks take it between M2 and the start of M3 (at my school I think they start around mid-June) and you spend all M3 year in school. The M4 year seems to be highly variable depending on the requirements your school sets forth, but it seems that most folks have a couple of months of "vacation" time. I think at my school you can be done in March or so, but I'm not sure.

Any reason you are in a hurry to get done with school when you haven't started yet?

Texas Tech has a 3 year program if you promise to do family medicine.

Really, the only way to accelerate this process is to finish college early. There are a couple of combined programs that had 7 years in total such as RPI and NJMS. There is a girl in my class @ WashU who dropped out of college after 2 years and then immediately got into here. Don't know what magic she used to pull that off.
