I believe Waiting gave you a good analysis of your delimma. The dental student that I know faced a similar quandry last year (UCONN vs U of Home State-with both having great reputations). In the end, the state school was chosen because the university campus in a robust urban area was preferred over the isolated medical complex in a quiet suburban zone.
 
A friend of mine faced a similar dilemma last year... he decided to opt for a school with a larger patient pool. Also you might want to consider the state you want a licence from and try and attend school there.
A question about your scholarship @ UCONN: is it a tution remission for out of state applicant so that you pay in state rate? so what happens if you undergo a change of status?

I didn't know UConn would offer me a scholarship. A lot of things started going through my mind.........like the possibiity of maybe eventually deciding to specialize. Their board scores are great. I think I'd like the environ at SB better. That's why I'm torn now.

Ms. Purtell, I agree with waitings summary of UConn. I thought it was an outstanding school, but I hated it there. I think you really need to consider yourself as an individual and how you'll fit at the school. Sure you can do outstanding at UConn, but if you hate the 4 years there and possibly hate what you're doing because of it, it is absolutely not worth. Do you think you can do well enough at SUNY-SB to still specialize? If you still do well on the NERBs and have a good GPA and class rank, you should be able to specialize regardless of where you go. The only difference is that at one school it's more dependent on you motivating yourself, and less on the curriculum of the particular school preparing you without much extra effort on yoru part. There's benefits to both sides but what fits you and your personality best? That should be the deciding factor.

I am still waiting on UConn, and I am basically expecting a rejection letter, <sigh> and it was my top choice. But I am relieved to hear at the same time that some of you thought they were a bit intense, I thought it was only me! Anyways, I was just curious how your interviews went there? and how they compared to your other interviews? 😛
 
Mammasan, I liked the Apex idea because it puts you in an actual office setting instead of a simulated classroom. It would be a great opportunity to extensively learn about managing a practice and learning how to deal with insurance companies, paper work, or everything else associated with a private practice. Keep in mind that this program takes the place of the "summer break". So it gives you the chance to go back home and relax for a couple of months without class while still being exposed to the dental practice. I don't know, just my personal opinion. Anyone else have any thoughts on APEX???

between houston and baylor, definetly houston, but between houston and san antonio, most likely houston. there were things about the baylor presentation that i didnt agree with and im from houston so i like the environment (the whole Texas Medical Center thing). baylor's location was a deterrent. did you apply to houston? let me know if you need any more info about tx schools.
 
let me say something positive about baylor though, i genuinely liked two people that interviewed me and the windows throughout the school make it less dungeon-like. you can also wear any color scrubs you want!! and houston you can only wear that baby blue color. i mean at baylor i saw jean scrubs, marroon scrubs, all kinda stuff.

Thanks for the input. I'm not sure if I want to specialize, but I want the option open. Both Stony Brook and UConn are in quiet areas, both equidistant from major cities, both mix meds and dental students and both have small class size. The big difference is, as you mentioned, the intensity of UConn. I was unsure about how I felt about that too. I'm glad you mentioned it. I don't know if I like the hustle-bustle of the big hospital setting. Stony Brook is much more laid back. UConn surprised me in this regard because you would think a P/F system would reduce competitiveness and lessen the intensity.

Oh, well. I still have a lot of thinking to do!

the way I understand it, the 10K is off the first year tuition in which I would pay the out of state rate. For years 2-4, I'd get the in-state rate like everyone else.

HI baccurso,

Why did you hate it so much at UConn? I felt a little uncomfortable there because of the reasons a few people have mentioned.........the "intensity" I guess. At Stony Brook, the board scores aren't as high, but if I did well I could probably still specialize if I so chose. You are right, it would be more a matter of me pushing myself a bit more instead of someone else doing the pushing. I think my personality probably suits SB better.

don't give up hope! a substantial number of interviewees likwly get into UConn. They don't interview that many people. I'm glad too that everyone else sensed the intensity there. I'm probably more the type for a laid back school, but who knows, maybe I would thrive at UConn.

My issue with UConn is that the environment clashed with my personality. The students seemed nice but kinda nerdy. The profs I interviewed with were good, but they seemed kinda aloof. Plus the whole giant hospital thing in the middle of no where was my major no. I want either a typical college town or a big city. I don't want to have to live too far away and have to really strive for things to do when I have free time. The setting just isn't what I'm looking for yet. I do however think it'd be a great place to do specialty training if I was married and ready to settle down, but I'm not there yet.

I have to definitely agree with your opinion of APEX!

i would love to go back home and work with a dentist i choose, and it's a great way to establish the dental connection... say you want to practice in your home state, the dentist you work with through APEX can definitely help you out.

it seems relaxing too that you dont have to worry about exams, studying for those few months!
 
oh! we would ONLY be assisting the dentist? 🙁
that's probably what we are all doing already as predental students.
i first assumed it would be more hands on than just assisting, but i guess not.

what do you guys think of the externship program? and excel?

The UConn dilemma continues, just got in yesterday. I feel your pain now Ms. Purtell! (although no 1 yr. scholarship for me)....I'm torn now too, b/w UNC and UConn. I think it's cool though that UConn is holding an open house for those accepted on 1/4th...I'm seriously considering going...although I completely agree with you Baccurso, I felt exactly the same about the medical center and Farmington...still, it's a great school...

I just got my acceptance to UConn yesterday. I really liked their program. As far as the intensity goes, I think that a professional school should be intense so that we know as much as we can before taking people's lives into our hands (o.k. maybe a little dramatic!).

sup people...as a 1st yr uconn student let me share something with you guys. it's true....i have to admit that the location is nothing to be desired of but you'll be so busy that you wouldn't even notice. besides....nyc is only a car ride away...not too bad. it's also true that you gotta bust your ass but you'll get used to it...it's not that bad but do get ready to study your freaking ass off. personally i like most of my classmates...they're cool...the class is pretty divers...and since they're only around 40 of us we tend to get to know each other better than if you were in a bigger class. hey....but i think the major thing that this skool has to offer is cheap tuition.....after the 1st yr you can declare yourself a resident and pay in-state tuition.....and that's a good thing....i don't want a big debt after i graduate....many dentists have told me to always go to a cheap skool or you'll be sorry later on....the burden of paying the debt is tremendous...you don't think bout it now but you'll realize it later. and don't think that you're going to be rich after you graduate....you're not going to make jack**** as a rookie dentist and with a big debt on your shoulders it's going to be a lot harder for you to establish yourself....think about it.

ok so I got UCONN!!! yipeee!

I am pretty sure that is where I am going, anyone else going there too? I know it has been the subject of debate on this board, but the tuition really makes a big difference!

I know I want to be a general dentist and am leaning toward Columbia right now, partly b/c I live in New York and partly b/c I think I'd get an awesome background for medically complex patients. BUT-- I don't want to be lost as the only classmate who doesn't want to specialize. Any thoughts??? Thank You!

If you want to stay in new york i would suggest nyu. I have a friend who is a junior at nyu and he is getting a lot of clinic time. He told me that at colombia they only get 1 day a week in clinic in the junior year. I don't know if this is true or not but you should inquire about this. If you want to be a clinician I would suggest go to NYU. As far as having a good basic science background, I think its the person, not the school that is responsible for that part of your education. I go to Marquette and when I took NDB part 1 ( all sciences) my class scored below the national average; however, I did much better due to my own study ethic and interest in basic medical sciences. True columbia does do well on their boards but what does that really matter if you want to be a good general dentist. I think clinical experience is much more important.

Thebeyonder, I interviewed on Oct. 19. I was really impressed. I guess that being from a small town, the idea of living in/near Farmington doesn't repulse me. UConn is my top choice, but I am waiting for OHSU cause their closer to home.

I really liked UT-Houston but have not heard anything from them yet. I interviewed on Nov. 26th. I interviewed at Baylor the first week of September. As for San Antonio, I won't know till February. So right now, Baylor is my only option in Texas anyways since Columbia, Case Western and Temple are too far away from home...Texas! Going to UT-Houston would have been nice b/c my parents are an hour away, my best friend goes to School of Public Health in the medical center. Well I am just grateful for all my acceptances.

Do you remember anything about the clinics at Baylor....I was there a while back and since it was my first interview too nervous to pay attention to the important parts of a dental school...like clinics, classrooms, etc.

To those having to choose between U of Public Home State and another school:

You might want to factor in the following thoughts in addition to school costs and living expenses.

1. The likelyhood of incurring hidden costs for such things as moving expenses and holiday/vacation travel.
2. Most people develop a hard to remove fondness for the area in which they grow up . I was raised in the vicinity of Seattle Wa. I remember taking my first job in Wash DC after I graduated from the U of Wash. I only lasted 9 months because I wanted out and took advantage of the first decent job opportunity that enabled me to get back home. Prior to that experience and before I completed college I was drafted into the US Army. I felt lucky because I was assigned to Fort Lewis in Tacoma Wa for basic training. We also had kids in our training company from New York City, Chicago, and Philadelphia. Unlike me, those boys thought they had been sent to the arm pit of the USA.

I interviewed Nov 9th. I don't think I can go to the open house because i will be home for winter break in Michigan. But I am 100% sure i want to go there, at least at this moment. I would like being in the area of Farmington, rather than a congested city.

I really want to go to UConn, they have a great reputation and the atmosphere there was much more appealing than OHSU. However, my wife wants to go to OHSU cause it is closer to family. . . in the end, who knows?! But becuase UConn lets you change residency, it will actually end up costing almost the exact same to go to either school. Good luck with your decision.
