Has anyone been accepted by a school after a bad interview experience?

I recently interviewed at a school and the interviewer told me what was flawed in my application. Specifically he told me what was missing and what I needed to improve on.

Is this it? I mean has anyone had a bad experience with an interviewer, or bad feedback, and then was still accepted?

Thanks

I had what I thought was a very poor interview at a school and was accepted very shortly after.

I wasn't sure if it was a really easy stress interview or just a sort of awkward normal interview. Very little eye contact, not a whole lot of expression, and I even got corrected on an answer to a WWYD type question I obviously didn't answer well.

It's a bad sign that they pointed out all your flaws, as it probably means you were a stretch candidate to get the interview in the first place. On the other hand it could have been a stress interview (I would suspect this if the flaws were minor or unimportant) in which they were just trying to feel you out and see how you deal with a challenge. Honestly, you can never really tell though until you get the WL, Acceptance, or Rejection

All the time.

I was extremely sick for one of my interviews and it took all of my effort to crack a smile and stay awake. Along with that, at one point it seemed like my interviewer even hinted that I wouldn't end up at that particular school, so I assumed I did very poorly. I ended up being accepted and was completely shocked. Moral of the story: try not to look too much into how your interviews went because it's nearly impossible to really know.

Probably not what you're going to want to hear, but this sounds similar to the first interview I had. Felt more like an advising session on what I needed to do to get in. Ended up getting waitlisted, which was crushing. I felt like they wasted my time interviewing me, it seemed like I didn't have a chance from the get go.

The next interview I had felt phenomenally better, quite the opposite of the first one. I'm still waiting to hear back on the second one, hopefully it is good news. My point is, after my first interview, I came on this forum hoping to hear about how maybe this guy was testing me under pressure and I'd still get in, but that wasn't the case at all for me, even though some thought it was. Maybe it was with you, but it's impossible to know, and what is done is done. Regardless though, it is over now, you have to move forward and work on the improvements they suggested, unless of course, you've been accepted elsewhere. I wish you the best of luck!

Thanks guys. I've already been accepted elsewhere but this one was a top choice of mine. But I got that backup so it's all good. And I agree, I won't know until they give the final decision.

It just threw me off when the interviewer gave me advice on how I should improve my application, at least he was kind about it. I wonder how much bearing it has on the overall decision...

During my first interview, I was interviewed by the Dean of Admissions.... Called her by the wrong name at the end of the interview... still got accepted. (I apologized in my thank you note)

How well do you take criticism? Maybe now they know.

Yeah, I said my pre-interview song was Hit 'Em Up by Tupac, which open with the lyrics ''that's why I ****** your ***** you fat mother******''. Interviewer didn't know the song but promised he'd look it up later *eyeroll*. Same interviewer told me I was idealistic about healthcare lol (funny because I'm not idealistic at all).

LOL that's a great pump up song

"fo-fo makes sure all yo kids don't gro"

This is not a good sign.

Then again, he might have been testing you to see how dedicated you were...ie, how easily discouraged you might be.

Is this what you mean when you say "bad interview"? That someone critiqued your app? Or did you stammer, babble, lose your train of thought, start crying?

Keep in mind that people are horrendous judges of their own interview performance.

It is possible that the interviewer wanted to advocate for you, and so was asking about all your flaws so that he would be able to defend you in front of the committee as they are likely to be brought up.

Also - I had an interview where my interviewer barely let me speak and spent most of the time making snide comments about holes in my application but I still got accepted.

Ahh yes, back in my ugrad days I would play that song and ****ing Problems by A$AP Rocky on repeat while cramming for my Orgo 2 exams.. It's crazy what an aggressive mindset can allow you to accomplish academically.

Literally one of my favorite songs!!! Glad to see there are other future doctors that share my taste in music!!!

My interviewer, the director of the program that I was applying to, flat out told me that I needed to do more research on the school before the next interview... Nonetheless they obviously found something in my application that they liked and accepted me 🙂

My interviewer called me a potential drug pusher in so many words...def got accepted.

What was the context for this?

Lol. I can't remember the specifics but...

Interviewer: So why do you want to be a doctor?
Me: I want to be able to help people who have limited access to getting the care they need such as people who have hypertension or diabetes who can't afford their medications.
Interviewer: So you want to be a drug dispensary?
Me: ......*thinks* Wait, that not what I meant...

I had a similar experience. I got a terrible headache during my interview and felt that it did not go well at all. I was sure that I would be rejected. It was a shock when I ended up getting in.

One of my interviewers critiqued my application big time, from overall experiences down to individual word choice in my essays. He even critiqued my answers to his questions. Result: accepted!

It's really hard to self-evaluate after an interview, imo.
