Accepted Students, What Are Your Stats?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I applied to MD schools in October.
And after I had completed my applications, my adviser said to me, "You are really interested in exercise, nutrition, preventative medicine, etc. right? Have you heard about D.O.'s?"
I had never even heard of them, so I went online and did some research, really liked what I saw, and decided to complete my application. Then I forgot about it.(I'm more than a little scatterbrained ADHD)
I remembered and completed it in early December, the rec. letters went out on December 19th from my adviser and AACOMAS finished in January or something.

I applied to: Lecom-B, PCOM, Nova, RVUCOM, and that's all I remember.
Secondaries received: All of them
Secondaries completed: Lecom-B, RVUCOM
Interviews: Lecom-B and RVUCOM
Accepted: Lecom-B and RVUCOM
And it looks like I'll be attending Lecom-B in the summer!

oh yeah, my numbers.

MCAT: 29 (12VR/8ps/9bs)
cGPA: 3.37 (I don't do homework/busywork very often, and that hurts in the nonscience classes)
sGPA: 3.7
EC: I shadowed 4 different Docs, worked as a diet and exercise counselor, and I captained/played on 3 Intramural sports teams every semester. Oh and I'm an EMT-B and I was President of an Honor's Society. I also have been a volunteer with the Special Olympics for the last 9 years.

Other than receiving flak about going D.O. instead of M.D., I'm pretty excited about all this. Lecom-B is REALLY nice, and lets be honest, the location doesn't hurt at all.

I know it'll be hard work, but I'm really pumped to finally be a step closer to being a doctor.

Dang! I thought that was how it was spelled, but the spell check kept correcting me...

Actually, I graduated in August. I spent the first 4 YEARS, count 'em 4, trying to get an appointment with the advisor. He left every day at noon, wouldn't return phone calls, avoided E-Mail, blah blah blah.

He had tenure and the University couldn't fire him. Finally, enough people complained that he was asked to step down from an advisement position and just teach.

So we got a new advisor in October and he finally was able to help.

And yeah, he knows what he's talking about and it is wonderful.

I've noticed a lot of people accepted with mcat scores on the lower side, but pretty high gpas. Are DO schools more forgiving with mcat than with the gpa?

yea seems like people who are low at one end make up for it by being high at the other end. Perhaps this is what they mean when they say DO schools are more forgiving than MD schools and look at the whole package!

Just wondering why you gave up on PCOM?

sGPA: 3.8
cGPA: 3.4 (a long time ago I went to one semester of school - had some bad stuff going on in my personal life and did really poorly, so it took a bit of work to bring my GPA back up to a so-so GPA)
29S (my phy. science was the worst at a 6, then I split 11 in VR and 12 in BS).

I applied at 13 DO schools (no MD schools - I like DO philosophy better), including secondary apps. I was invited to interview at 5 schools. I interviewed at DMU, KCUMB, LECOM. I was accepted at KCUMB and LECOM, chose LECOM for a variety of reasons.

I was born and raised in Atlanta. My family still lives there. It's a great city.

It also has a wicked smog problem/bad for allergies.

And my fiance has fantastically awful allergies. She gets sick every time we go home to visit, so living there full time isn't really an option. She's already drugged to the gills on allergy meds and it still messes her up.

Otherwise, PCOM is a wonderful school. I've heard very positive things about it.

Plus, you know, Bradenton or Atlanta. I'm a water nut, and I love Fla, and the missus is a biologist with Marine specialties.

A bunch of factors now that I look at lol 😀

My sciGPA was 2.98, cumGPA was 2.92. My gpa will be going up since I've taken 5 classes for new grades since I submitted my AACOMAS. It should be around a 3.30. 9PS-10VR-8BS (27Q) MCAT. I submitted primary apps to 12 DO schools, sent secondaries to LECOM-E, RVU, CCOM, DMU, and KCUMB. Rejected post-secondary from CCOM, never heard back from RVU, put on pre-interview hold at DMU and KCUMB. Received an interview from LECOM-E almost immediately after submitting the secondary for 5 weeks later. Almost didn't call to verify the interview date within 2 weeks but my mom talked me into it and I waited until 3:00 on the last day to call. Interviewed 11/24, received an acceptance to LECOM-E on 12/12. I am so glad my mom talked sense into me and told me to verify the interview date. I couldn't be happier with the school and I think it's gonna be a great fit. What I think helped me in the interview was I talked about why LECOM and Erie would be a great fit for me specifically. I also told them how I drove around the city the nite before to look at the school and all the hospitals (Millcreek, Hamot, St. Vincent's, the VA) and how the town reminded me of Omaha, Nebraska where I grew up and I really liked the feeling of the city.

Advisor is an alternate spelling, and I think it looks nicer 🙂. Adviser is more commonly used in American English, though. Both are correct.
