Can anybody shed some light on what the general procedure is after one accepts a spot at a dental school? Do a little dance, pay the deposit, and then what? I certainly assume that there will be enrollment paperwork, FAFSA forms, roommate/apartment hunting, possible tooth collecting, etc.

The reason I ask is that I plan on being out of the country for a significant chunk of 2012 and I'm worried that not having a permanent mailing address or steady access to the internet for 6 months might mortally complicate the process, whatever it may be. I obviously don't want to get accepted somewhere and then cut and run right when they need me to jump through all of the hoops necessary for enrollment. Knowing what's coming might at least help me plan ahead so that I can accomplish everything I possibly can while I'm still stateside.

So, do any current dental students/precocious pre-dents know what's what?

First, you fork over 1K for a deposit. After that im sure there are a bunch of forms you have to sign (which i assume should come when your accepted, say December 1st or 2nd (if your expecting that)).

Financial Aid and FAFSA stuff usually (based on my college experience) needs to be completed by May 1st, although it may be different for graduate students.

Also, don't forget you will be required to undergo a background and criminal check. I don't know if this is accomplished through AADSA, i.e. you fill out something on your AADSAS application (Tufts does this)

Obviously, it isn't the best time to leave the country, however, you don't have a choice.

the process is slightly different for different schools. so you should contact the school that you decide to go.

I second that. Ask them for the specific deadlines you'll have to meet in the coming months (especially the ones you'll be away for).

Also, check with the school and your doctor to see what vaccines you'll need, and if you'll need to take a course or two for first aid and CPR.

Good luck.
prepare for the hard work.

After you get accepted here is what needs to be done:

1) Choose a school (its harder than you think)
2) Pay the deposit
3) Fill out Financial aid forms (unless you are rich) both FAFSA and institutional (varies)
4) Tie up other loose ends with school (they will let you know)
5) Take care of vaccinations you will need for clinic
6) Find a place to live (can be quite challenging)
7) Figure our how you are going to move across the country if you choose a school that is far away.
8) Pay the second deposit
9) Move to the location
10) Start studying

These things will probably be significantly more difficult without a mailing address or consistent access to the internet. I wouldn't say it can't be done though. Make sure you at least have a working cell phone.

Find local oral surgeons and start collecting teeth. Fill labeled jars with 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. Leave as many jars at different offices as possible. You will thank me when you start school.

I'm curious, you're the second person I heard that says collecting teeth, can you elaborate on that? why?

Haha I can share some teeth with you guys. My dad is a dentist and started collecting them for me before I even asked him to.

If you have someone reliable (family) that can check your mail religiously and communicate with you easily (the same day), then there's no reason why you can't go and study abroad or do what you want to do outside of the country. You will be getting correspondence from the dental school and you don't want to miss a deposit payment or any paperwork that they may ask from you.
