Accepted with a 28 or below?

If I end up witha 28 score I will definitely not take it over. My feeling is will a 30 be so much better to overcome applying late? From what I have been told no it will not be. Therefore, if I achieve that score I will apply early and broadly to mid to lower tier schools. Thats just my opinion.

26 MCAT, 3.71 from UCLA- got into SUNY BUffalo and waitlisted at Loyola and UVM

ZAZA,

I have the same score 🙂 predicament eh?

So what do you think you will do Spin Girl? I have already started to study again, just in case, worst case scenario. I am on two waitlists, so I am hoping that I will be lucky and get in and then be able to just go sit on a beach somewhere, but until then I guess I have to keep studying again, cause I don't know how else to improve my application. My volunteer exp, lor, grades can't really change too much. I have already been to grad school and I think my lor could not be any better. I think all I can do is rewrite my personal statement and keep trying to do better on the mcat. And pray... What is your predicament and are you going to retake it? The one thing that scares me is that I could do worse too.

I think if I don't get in this year that I will probably move to DC cause in my state in the great southwest there are few jobs or good experiences I have been able to find. I was wondering Spin Girl, seems like you might be in DC right now, do you have any advice on places to find cool experiences or jobs in DC, if you do actually live there now?

Hey Kgoods,
Where did you do your post-bacc? Was it a program or just grad school?

I did grad work at West Chester Univ. in PA. They do have a post-bacc program, but I got a GA position there and decided to go that route. Sorry, I just reread my post and that didn't make much sense.

10,9,9 is a solid score I would NOT retake, you will clear most screens with these numbers. Balance is key, no section below 9 is strong.

I took the april 04' MCAT cold...I hadnt had time to study really and I just took one free practice MCAT from Kaplan...But I had tutored organic and gen chem for few years. Anway I got a P11, B9, V8...yes I bombed verbal. But I was told by my advisor that I had a good shot at getting in. I am completely traditional (21 white female). I also transferred two times and took a bunch of prereqs at a community college. I graduated from a science university with a 3.98. I also had plenty of extras and a nusring assitant certification with lots of hospital experience. I got 5 interviews...accepted to UBuffalo, Penn State, and Temple (I interviewed at temple after interviews were over, they "misread" my application, waitlisted, then accepted. I interviewed and am currently waitlisted at Drexel and Suny Upstate. At my Suny Upstate interview I did have to explain why I bombed verbal...I replied I think during verbal I may have been hallucinating (my testing center was 589068408 degrees). Anyway good luck and writing letters of intent about how much you would love to go to their school may help you get off the waitlist.

An 8 is hardly "bombing" any section.

I would opt to disagree. I got an 8 in verbal and the only time my grades or MCAT came up in an interview was with that craptastic number. The guy actually said to me, "Why did you do so poorly in your verbal section? I'm originally from Pakistan and I did better than that. You're from America! That should be your best section." All I could say was, "You're right. I should have done a lot better." It was a good thing I owned the other sections though and ended up getting in a couple of places.

No....that tells me more about the interviewer and the large chip residing on their shoulder than it does about you. I can't believe you'd even agree with them. Anyone who can define you, ultimitely controls you and that's too much power to give anyone - ADCOM or not.

yea i dont think mcat and gpa is the be all end all. i have a friend who took 2 years to get in with a 33 and a 4.0 gpa. at the same time i know several people who have gotten in with 24 and 25. you have to remember the number that they say is an AVERAGE so there has to be some lower and some higher. however, if you have a lower mcat you have to seperate yourself some other way. that is the real trick

I am also currently waitlisted at 2 schools and hoping to get in. Right now i'm just busy writing letters of intent/interest and calling a lot...and working full time. Since i've been out of school for a year already, I don't know if it's worth it to retake in august. Even if i do get around a 30-31 applying late is always a bad idea.....i don't know!! anybody else have some advice?? :scared:

There's hope for people with a 28 on MCAT! I am now officially done with the application process. I had a 28 R, 3.77 GPA and I got into:

UVM, Drexel, Temple, and Penn state

I think I did a lot better in the admissions process than I expected. Just more proof that MCATS aren't everything 😳

a 28 is not bad at all (unless you have one section below an 8)!

Here are your options:

RETAKE: if your GPA and EC aren't very strong and/or you have a low score in one of the sections. (for example, a 15PS, 15BS, 5V L says that you're a genius who doesn't speak English; but a 10, 10, 10 looks much better).

DO NOT RETAKE: if the above doesn't apply. Go get 'em, tiger!

What school did your friend get into?

True for some schools, not for others

However, almost all premed advisors are full of crap...

Oh, I COULDN'T AGREE MORE!

Hi! I received a 28 the first time I took the MCAT, and although I had both a BA and a Master's in Bio from NYU (with good grades) I was systematically rejected from everywhere I applied...no interviews, and it was very costly. So, I actually studied and retook the darn MCAT (which stinks, I know), received a 31, and was interviewed at 8 schools. I am now going to Univ. at Buffalo in the fall! My advice, unless your grades are very good (3.6 and up) and you went to a good school, then I would re-take the wretched MCAT!

what is a "good school?"

Kdogg,

how early did you apply and get your secondaries in? Congrats on your acceptances!!

Hi everyone,

I have a 28 and am interested to see how many people have gotten in with a similar score. I'm currently waitlisted at a couple of schools but would like to hear from those who got in (where at?) and with what kind of grades. Also, what experiences did you have that might have compensated for a lower MCAT? Thanks, that would be sooo helpful!

😀

Don't lose out hope. Several friends of mine were waitlisted at one of our state universities this year with a 26-28 range of MCAT scores. Two people had a 26, two people had a 27, and at least 1 person had a 28. They all got off the waitlist with the last person getting off the waitlist like half a week ago. So don't lose out hope. If worse come to worse, there's always a chance to reapply and do it early so that you get interviews and acceptances.

i also knew of a few people that got in right away with a 28 MCAT. It depends on the other factors of you application. (I.e. ecs, lors, essays, and gpa)

I have a friend that got into Temple with a 28 and a 3.6 GPA.
