It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood! In all seriousness, it does sound like you are much better off going into an MD program, given your comments. If you decide that route, you can always take the year to try to improve your scores. Maybe then, you can get into an American school rather than Ross but if not, hey you still got an MD's education right? Good luck

I have a friend at Ross, so I'm not going to throw fire at the school. I would like to share with you some of his comments that he has made to me:

Ross built a very good reputation for itself (one of the best in the islands). But then, Devry bought it and I guess that the class size has jumed to a ridiculous amount...(he wasn't sure) and the school has become "money hungry." He noted that there IS a crime problem there, contrary to what Ross will have you believe and the whole third-world setting is a rather large pill to swallow. Lastly, make sure that you apply to Ross for the Fall, because if not, you'll miss your match and will have to wait an entire year with an MD, without a job.....

Lastly, this was told to me by my mentor in the Deptartment of Neurosurgery at the University I attend:

The department of Neurosurgery had one spot open for a fellowship and among the applicants, two were subjects of his comments; 1. a harvard med school grad, and 2. a University of (a great U.S. university) graduate who transfered in after his first year from Ross. The Ross-transfer student had board scores that were better than the Harvard grad and comparable LORs.

This is where it may hurt. My mentor told me that even though the department believed that the Ross-transfer student was a better choice, they picked the Harvard fellow because they are "Trying to build our reputation and there is NO way we'll bring on anyone who was educated in another country."
-of course, my mentor was against this, but what the Dean says...goes..

So, if you want to be a physician practicing in a very competitive specialty (ie. surgery, neurosurgery, plastics, etc), you'll have a better chance if you went D.O. just because there are D.O. spots for you. However, if you know that you want to go primary care, then you'll have no problem getting a residency being from Ross.

Something to think about... if you really don't care about the initials, and truly want to be a great primary care physician, then go D.O. and spare yourself the third-wolrd 'heat stroke.'

Note: The things I wrote were not facts, because I have not been to Ross or worked in the admin office NOR was I in the Committee room when the
Ross-transfer student was rejected. But you and anyone else entertaining the caribean route should consider this and do the appropriate research.

I feel so blessed to be accepted! My stats suck and ccom looked through them and saw the potential I have! I think my strong research background helped. The weirdest part of this thing is I have an acceptance to an out of state school and OUCOM still hasnt invited me for an interview. 😕 Whatever. chicago is where I belong. Why hasnt anyone started a ccom class of 2009 thread yet?

One thing I wanted to add. nobody be discouraged by the "DO stigma". I did some homework and I found a ccom person did a radiology residency at the university of chicago recently. If you handle your buisness in med school, nobody can keep you from being an all star! Good Luck everyone!!

MSUCOM took a long time to invite me for an interview. My secondary was complete except for the August MCAT in August. I forwarded my August MCAT as soon as I got it on THx (mid October) and was complete with MSU about two days later

I didn't get my interview invite until Nov 19. They did schedule me a late interview (1/13), but I talked to Admissions and they moved me to 12/2.
