When did you take ACLS? I'm a second year and they're offering it at my school, but it's a whole weekend, and of course I need to study. Some folks have said not to worry about it until residency, so I'm just wondering if anyone thought it was valuable to have before your clinical years.

I'm a 2nd year and I took it this summer. I enjoyed it and really only had to study a couple hours in between the two days (learn the algorithms, you'll be fine). I think it's kinda helpful to know what's going on in codes when I'm hanging out in the ED now. It also taught me some basic pharm (which we haven't had yet).

You don't NEED it before residency, but a few times I've been asked by an attending to do something (nothing exciting - just transport a patient or something) and they've asked if I have my ACLS.

My school requires it before 1st year, so we all take it over the summer beforehand, and then we renew the summer after 2nd year.

At our school it's required during 4th year didactics, so we'll have it prior to starting residency. I can see it being helpful during 3rd year.

We're required to do BLS during Med 1 and ACLS in Med 2. ACLS must be completed inorder to go on to 3rd year rotations.

We do ACLS the first diadactic week of third year before rotations, however they just recently changed to that. Prior it was done during second year, and you had to do it. It was required before going on rotations.
