I'm looking to start volunteering this fall, I'll likely to be applying to several free clinics as well as tutoring positions at school.

I was also considering volunteering at the ACLU, and was wondering if this was something I would be able to list on a medical school app and have it be a positive thing. I love the ACLU, and I would think it should be fine considering it's not at all a partisan organization, but wanted to see what you guys thought about it.

Sure. Any volunteering is good volunteering.

it's definitely something you can put on your app. i think many schools would like to see both clinical volunteering (to show that you are aware of what a hospital/medical environment is like) and community service/non-clinical volunteering (to show that you enjoy serving others).

of course, many applicants use hospital volunteering to demonstrate both their awareness for the field and their desire to serve. having both wpuld only help you.

As a plus, if you enjoy it, it'll make it that much more meaningful to you, allowing you to write about it with more detail and insight when the time comes. Have at it!
