Acoustic Guitar Suggestions?

You should spoil yourself a little more and get a 12-string.

I've been playing for about 7 years now and Yamaha does make excellent acoustic guitars and I do believe they are superior to fender's (with the exception of fender models that are made in Japan). Generally speaking the best guitars come out of Japan but today most are manufactured in Korea or Mexico. See where it's made before you make your decision but Yamah is def. a good pick. If you really can't decide, call up Tim Mahoney.

Just cause it has more strings doesn't mean it's better. Twelve strings are only worthwhile if they're really what you want to play, most players I know play them with slide but if you want to hear some badass 12 string finger pickin' listen to Leo Kottke's "My Feet Are Smiling" record.

As for your guitar, depends on what sound you want, what style of music you play etc. Breedloves are the best acoustic guitars out there, hands down, but they are mucho pricey accordingly. If you can find a good used one within your price range, get it. Those things have soul. Washburns sound great and reasonably priced. Stay away from Oscar Schmidt, poor manufacturing overall. I'm not too familiar with the Yamaha acoustics but their electric guitars are awesome, my boyfriend plays his Ty Tabor sig. series out all the time.

Ebay is a great tool, but if you're serious about playing I'd consider stopping by your local music store (if you have one). While you can get great deals online, there are a lot of lemons out there. Most stores offer a lifetime of restrings and tune-ups if you buy the guitar there, plus some might even offer a discount on adjustments. However if you buy your guitar online and it needs a lot of work done, you'll be spending a lot anyway. Even just putting new pick ups in can get expensive depending on the quality and the wiring.

Congratulations your acceptance! You deserve to be spoiled a little, good luck finding what you want 🙂

Hey,

I was in your interview group (at midwestern ccp, and mentioned that I played guitar). I recommend a washburn or takamine acoustic, its in that price range... just stay away from ovations, they suck and sound like crap.

He would just tell me to get a PRS, lol.

ha yeah he probably would. Nice to find another 311 fan on here. Everyone thinks my name indicates I'm from Southern Cal, but I was referring to the 311 song.

I wish so badly I could have gone to that show. I'm making it my goal before I die to make it to a 311 day, but I had better act fast. My fav. part on that video is when Tim screams into his pickups and you can hear it through his cabs.

I noticed someone else mentioned washburn and takamine.

I was going to suggest you play a few of those before you make up your mind.

I own a washburn (one of the cheaper/pure flattop models.) that I like really well. It's one of the cheaper models <$400 that I keep on a stand beside my desk. If my daughter comes in and knocks it over and "plays" it... well no big loss ya know.

I have always loved the way the takamine guitars sound when I play them. (and they are prettier... for what thats worth) If I was looking for a new acoustic right now takamine would be high up on my list of ones to look at.

I do have an ovation (pre-crappy days) 12 string. It's a beautiful sounding guitar the problem is you are so limited in what you are going to do with it for the most part. I've had it probably 18 years now and in that time I think I have used it twice for anything other than my own personal amusement.

A 12 string is a nice "third" guitar for when you already have what you want from your acoustics.

I've been playing for roughly 3 years now(30min - 2 hrs a day), and have been very impressed with Takamine. I own 1 Takamine acousitic/electric, and 1 acoustic. Both were fairly inexpensive and just provide the most bang for your buck. Awesome sound, crisp, clean and nice look too.

The G series of Takamine is very good, either 6 or 12 string. I believe they are made in Korea and assembled in CT. Just my .02

ovation! i play my dad's its over 30 years old...beautiful sound...and its acoustic/electric!

Ovation is not what it used to be. About 12-14 years ago something happened.. I don't know what exactly but the guitars didn't feel the same, didn't sound the same and didn't play the same as they did and they have never gotten that quality back as far as I know.

hmmm...i guess that does explain a lot..haha

whenever i go to a guitar center and play their ovations it didn't sound that great and i thought it was because the strings were bad or something...guess not! takamine is nice too!

I have a Yamaha FG 403s. I costed $200 and sounds great for its price. Only thing about it is that the pins came too tight, and snapped a few of my strings. I had to loosen up with a tiny screwdriver.

mmm... I have a Taylor 814ce and it's filthy. The tone is out of this world. And chicks dig it.

Taylors are typically the Benz of guitars (with the Martins being the Beemers). I personally find the Taylors to have the roundest sound of all guitars, so I'd say you are a lucky guy for having one. I'd like to trade in my Martin for a taylor anyday

I got a Fender 12 string and it sounds amazing. $400. Also if you were to get a Fender American Standard they tend to toss in a free case
