I was wondering what are the kind of ACT scores people that get accepted into direct to medical programs get, because I've heard rumors that if they aren't a certain score they get thrown out without even reviewing the transcript. I got a 31 on the ACT and I was wondering if that's high enough to get into any direct to medical programs, and if ACT scores are valued higher than high school grades. Thanks in advance.

Are you talking about a BS/MD program or are you talking about getting accepted to a college and then reporting your ACT to medical schools when you apply in your Jr year?

If its the latter then it probably won't matter what you get on the ACT. If its the former then you'll probably have to contact individual BS/MD programs and ask what their averages are. I'd think a 31 is pretty competitive but I assume many BS/MD programs like to see SATs as well since ACT is predominately a midwest test from what I understand

I think a 31 is a competative score.

ACT scores are more valuable than HS grades because they give a better comparison between canidates from different schools.

It's been a long time, I graduated HS in 2002, but it seems back then the local BS/MD program that I was interested in wanted at least a 30 on the ACT. I think a 31 is fine, but call the program just to check.

I'd say a 31+ is reasonable...

Then again, some programs are going to be more competitive. Northwestern is probably going to pull your 95th percentile students while the 90s will work for the state schools.

Plus, it's probably going to be weighted in a formula with your GPA. (GPA*10+ACT)= Magic Number or something like that

(don't quote me on the percentiles... I'm just trying to give you an idea on the relative differences)

A score of 31 should be competitive for a BS/MD program. I got a 29 and was accepted into a PMMD program after my freshman year. Just try to get a lot of things to feel out a resume. Volunteer, jobshadow, clubs, etc.. What schools program are you looking at?

Not sure what schools you're looking at but it seems some are looking for scores in the 32-34 range, on the concordance tables a 1400=32, 1500=34:

Good luck!🙂

BTW, Brahm, when a school is specifying a "minimum" they will usually reject you without reading further if you don't meet it. Could be a waste of your time and money to apply. But don't confuse that with their "average" - obviously lots of students were below that or it wouldn't be an average! So you should apply there even if you're a little under that mark.
