Hi,

As an active duty member of the Navy I am looking to use tuition assistance to finish the remainder of my degree. Being active duty and working until 1800/ 6:00pm the only option I am really left with is online classes.

It would be great to take advantage of TA and save my 9/11 bill for higher education such as a masters or medical school.

I am looking to take classes with Thomas Edison State College.

How will medical schools view the grades of the online classes I take with this college? Will they be more lenient considering I took them while on active duty? The classes I am taking are just to complete my BA in Biology and the only medical school prereq is physics and a sociology class.

Do some research on the schools that you are interested in. Many will not accept online course work for pre-requisites. Further, almost every medical school in the country requires that both semesters of your physics course have an associated lab. That pretty much rules out online physics.

I you are uncertain, call the schools.

Also, I am not sure if you are interested in staying in the Navy or not but if so, you should consider this: http://www.usuhs.mil/adm/emdp2.html

Actually, there are classes that meet on the weekend, as well as later evening classes that may be on your base through UMUC, UofOk, etc. See the ed center counselor and see what can be set up. I know a lot of your pre-reqs are hopefully done by this point, but online labs are almost a guaranteed no-go at most medical schools.

I'm taking night classes at a 2-year college, then transferring to a 4-year to finish up. If you can do something like this it will keep you well under the TA annual cap and allow you to save the GI Bill.

Feel free to ask questions, as I have friends who are going through the same process, both USN and USA.

What are your goals? Would you be happy at a DO school or would you prefer MD?

If the former, they are much more friendly towards online classes for the BA.
If the latter, the vast majority of schools strongly prefer traditional classes. If you go this route, you'll need a very good GPA to be competitive.

Either way, you'll want to do all the pre-req's (and labs) in-class. Preferably at a 4-year university, but a CC can also work if you have no other options.

Here is the website for University of Oklahoma online distance learning classes. http://cidl.ou.edu/d2l/courses/independentstudy.cfm You can either take the self-paced version of the class, which means you can enroll whenever and you have 6 months from the date of enrollment to finish the class. Tests are proctored in Norman, or can be proctored over the internet via ProctorU. You can also choose to take the class during the normal OU semesters. OU has great online classes (I've taken some myself) and if you take them during the OU semester, they show up on your transcript as if you took them in the classroom. OU offers Gen Chem 1 and 2 online (lab online as well), math up to calculus 4, and physics 1. I highly recommend OU distance learning for pre-med classes.
