ADADEMIC MEDICINE: DO vs MD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
there are several DO schools in or near decent sized cities....off the top of my head...PCOM, UMDNJ...etc etc....most people don't live right where they work either....and I'm sure more then enough other DO schools are within driving distance from a city.

Do you want to just teach or actually attain the rank of "professor" through a tenure-track system in academia?

Teaching is no problem. You can even be a volunteer clinical faculty (and get a non-tenure title of clinical professor)

To get tenure, you gotta do research or scholarly work - along with other requirements that the university, school, and department may require of you (including teaching, advising, etc) - and publish stuff in peer-review journals (along with giving presentations at peer-conferences)

Also realize that academia pays less than private practice

There are DOs who are tenure-track "professors" at MD institutions. Around Philly, there are DO professors at all the major medical schools (Temple, Drexel, Jefferson, Penn, along with the obvious PCOM)

I'm sure there are DO professors on tenure-track positions (or have already obtained tenure) at other major MD institutions
