welcome 2 the thread.let's try and build this thread back to the glory of earlier similar threads.........................:luck::xf:
hi golden dentist....i am trying to read from the books recommended in the reading list ..is taht enough ??i am not really sure how to go about this whole thing...would be able to help ???

Hello everyone.
Anyone preparing for ADC final exams. Need help i am set for Nov 2009 exam so any one can help me with the materials or advices thx

This is yet ANOTHER reminder that users are not allowed to use SDN to solicit, sell, borrow and post copywritten materials. This INCLUDES telling others to email you for the materials.

The thread has been closed down before for such activity and we have very little tolerance for it. I have already removed several such posts; if you find this thread useful, please do not engage in the above activities as I will not hesitate to close the thread and remove the users from SDN.

could you explain what this thread can be used for? u have already done enough damage;might as well close this,it doesn't matter anymore.

I have not "done [any] damage". The users have. All I and other Moderators have done is to enforce the SDN Terms of Service. These rules are set aside to protect SDN, its users, and authors of copywritten material.

Forum members in another forum have been contacted by a very powerful testing authority for violation of their privacy issues by posting questions. They may be sued or lose their licenses. Therefore, it is my goal to protect SDN users as these organizations, including the ADC, are very interested in protecting their product.

P.S. plz. do not forget to cancel my membership too as this forum has lost the basic purpose of its conception in the first place

You are free to contact memberservices via a PM if you wish your account to be deleted.

SDN was not designed to allow users to violate copywrite. I am not sure why you think they should be. Since you are a relatively new user (April 2007), I can assure you, as a user since the conception of SDN, that it was not designed as a clearinghouse to distribute copywritten materials for free and deny the authors of those materials to be paid.

You seem to be confused as to the reason and philosophy behind SDN and its forums. It is not to allow users to break the law. It is to provide a community of healthcare professionals the ability to talk to each other, trade information and share experiences. However, there are limits and as noted above, multiple times, sharing information does not mean that you can share a product for which someone has worked hard to create and deserves to be paid for, for free.

Users are allowed to discuss what materials are "best", what they thought of the exam, how to apply for the exam, where to take it, set up study partners and groups, how it was organized, etc.. They are NOT allowed to:

- post exam questions
- ask others to email, mail or otherwise send them materials which are copywritten

This is very simple, yet users here continue to violate the above. I am unsure as to why.

I have a question about the documents needed for the assessment.

ADC requires (according to their website) "Official transcripts of educational courses completed showing subjects, hours, examination results and details of practical and clinical education, in original language."

Now ... do they mean the grades sheet, listing courses, semester hours of each course and the grade? Or they need the syllabus of every course one has ever taken during his dental studies?!?!?!

Please help.

Hi everyone,
am looking for study partner for ADC part 1 in brisbane, any one interested please contact me.

Hi everyone,

I'm sitting for march 2010 in sydney. I'm happy to contact with whose wants to share experience, clear doubts and study.

🙂

Hi, I am preparing for my clinical exam , if you and good knowledge of the Books I suggested , it will be easy for you to clear the Theory examination. The latest 2010 MCQ means , you must read it 35 to 45 % of questions come from these. There is a company named Dentalsupply prepare a fresh Book after every exam, if you read that you will have less problem also they suggest you the kind of Books you need to read. The mail address of the Dentalsupply is dentalsupply at mail dot com
Regarding the N.D.B.E material and Kaplans clinical notes got nothing to do with ADC Theory examination these Books and notes are for Canada and USA Exams. Most people get confused and read unwanted stuff and waste the time. I am fully aware of N.D.B.E material and read it but it was of no help to me.
Regarding the Books
Comprehensive review of dentistry by Louis Boucher
Dentistry by R.A. Cawson
Clinical Problem Solving in Dentistry by Edward Odell edition-3
The Handbook of paediatric dentistry by Angus C. Cameron & Richard P. Widmer the latest edition
Hope you are happy with the answer.

hey hii everyone..could anyone give me ur suggestions regarding the material for adc part 1.am bit confused and dont know which buks to follow..that would be a great help..thanks inadvance.

My suggestions are:

OET:
OET material is available from thier website. For the amount of money you are going to be spending on all these tests, just buy the sample dentistry tests and download the general sample tests for free from thier website. This is a very simple english test. If you can read, speak, understand and write english well you will do ok. Remember the rules have changed and you must pass all 4 sections at the same sitting to move on to the preliminary

Preliminary:
Mostly basic clinical science. Any MCQ review will be helpful, but there are definitely repeats from the 1000mcq series. I studied Dental secrets, Australian therapeutic guidlines, US dental decks, Canadian NDEB MCQ, 1000MCQ and reviewed some of the standard texts. Ended up with an A overall. This is not a hard test, it covers basic dentistry. Don't worry about studying complex oral surgery, perio surgery, implants etc. Cover all the basics, know the drugs and how to use them, know how to handle medical emergencies in the dental office.

Final:
I haven't written yet, but my timetable is for 6 days split into 2 3.5 hour blocks each day. First half day is a lecture. 2 full days dedicated to operative dentistry. 1/2 day sessions for endo, perio, pedo, oral medicine, infection control, radiology, oral surgery. I'm studying Dental secrets, Dental decks, SAQ's from the US clinical and PGY programs, Sturdevants operative, McCracken's RPD, Cameron's Pedo, Tan's CUD/CLD, Little&Fallace Management of the medically compromised patient, White&Pharoh Radiology, Shillingburg Fixed Pros, Ingles Endodontics, Carranza's Periodontology, Contemporary OMFS, Australian therapeutic guidelines: Oral and Dental, ADA infection control guidelines, ADA clinical practice guidelines.

There is alot of material to cover for the final. My approach was to start writing study notes from the texts a few months in advance. Now I am just studying review notes and review questions as the test approaches.

Hope that helps

Rob

OET Useful info:

OET exam is valid for 2 yrs. Visit there website for more info.

THE OET CENTRE
G.P.O. Box 372
Melbourne Vic. 3001. Australia
Tel + 61 3 9825 3800
Email: [email protected]
Web-site: http://www.occupationalenglishtest.org

Preliminary Exam Information:

When: Exam held 2 times each year. Can be given in India or Australia.
Cost: Approx $1100
Preliminary exam is Valid for 3 years.

Books you MUST read:

MCQs in Dentistry by R.A. Cawson
Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry by Laura Mitchell & David A. Mitchell
Therapeutic Guidelines - Oral and Dental, Ver 1. 2007
Clinical Problem Solving in Dentistry by Odell
Mosby's Dental Dictionary, 2nd Edition
A comprehensive review of dentistry by Bouchers

Where to get these books:

I bought them from Amazon.com. Also some from University of Queensland Bookshop in Brisbane City.

You can also read them at the University of Queensland Library on Turbot st in Brisbane City. If you want to borrow them from there then you pay approx $150 for 1 year membership.

Exam Preparation:

I think you need about 3 months to prepare. Studying approx 8 hrs a day.

Clinical Exam Info:

Exam is held twice each year. You have to do this exam in Australia and you must pass ADC preliminary exam to give this exam.
Exam Cost: $6100

You can do a Melbourne Orientation Training Course for Overseas Dental Graduates. This is a 20 weeks course which helps you to clear the ADC Clinical Exam. You have to pass an entrance exam for this course and there is a separate english language requirement (IELTS etc). They do not accept OET results. You also have to provide a (working with children certificate and police clearance cert). This course is held twice each yr and it costs about $25000.

Good news: There is a very high probability of clearing the ADC clinical exam if you do this course.

Working while studying:

You can work as a dental assistant in Australia while you are trying to clear these exams. Pay is about $40k per year or about $22 per hour.

Other useful information:

If you are planning on moving to australia on a permanent basis then please consider living costs here. Dentist salary here is about $100k to $140k with local experience and approx $70k for a graduate. They may seem high but the cost of living here is very high as well. If you are earning $100k per year then you would pay $25k in tax and 9% to 17% towards superannuation.

Cost to rent a house in Brisbane is about $400 per week (more is Sydney or Melbourne) and to buy a good condition 4 bedroom house is about $400000.

If you need further information then please contact me on [email protected]

thank you so much for the suggestions. really appreciate it 🙂

I don't know ... I'd rather stay away from Dentalsupply.
They call themselves a company, but yet they have no website, the only way to communicate with them is by e-mail ...

Sounds fishy ... I wouldn't pay hundreds of $ to quite "anonymous"/phantom company ...

I've recently completed the exam process and thought I should share my experience.

First of all, you are looking at 3 years to finish the whole process, so you should take that into consideration.

The basic layout of the final exam starts with 2 days of written exams (infection control, oral medicine, restorative, perio, prosth, pedo, pathology will all be covered in the short answer and multiple choice. You will also have to design a partial denture (upper/lower). The questions are straigtforward and mostly clinical (ie. a picture or radiographs and treatment plan and how you would manage). For infection control I would suggest getting the ADA clinical guidelines and the ADA infection control guidelines.

The next 4 days are clinical.
Operative has 3 tests, each 3.5 hours long.
#1- Bridge prep and oral exam
#2- Amalgam preps (simple and complex) and restore a previosly prepared complex amalgam preparation. Remember that there are pulps in these teeth, which is important to take into consideration for the complex amalgam. They seem to prefer conventional amalgam preps (G.V Black). I would suggest you do this type of prep as opposed to conservative amalgam preps (Miles Markley) or ultra conservative preps. There will also be an oral exam
#3- Composite preps and restore plus oral exam.

Perio- Full charting on a quadrant, scale a designated area (I had to do Q3&4) and treatment plan whole mouth followed by oral exam. I would suggest getting the perio supplement from the Australian Dental Journal septemper 2009 supplement (v. 54), which is a fairly complete overview of current practices in periodontics.

Pedo- Short oral exam, maybe 25 minutes. All the questions from Cameron. Remineralization and prevention in the high caries risk patient are important. Remember that there are new fluoride guidelines in Australia from the Australian research council for oral health.

Oral Radiology and Oral Surgery: Oral rad you will have to take 2 films in ten minutes (plenty of time). Just make sure you have excellent infection control. Followed by a oral exam, which was fairly in depth. You needed to know pathology, radiographic errors, identify different types of exposures, SLOB rule, some oral path. Oral surgery you will be required to take a history on a patient, answer some questions about thier OPG and medical history and then extract one to several teeth. Followed by a oral exam. Instrument identification, pharmacology, oral diagnosis, oral path and clinical questions about how you would handle the cases shown in pictures. You will be asked about how to handle various medical emergencies in the dental office.

Endodontics- Access openings on 3 teeth, shape and obturate one canal, rubber dam and oral exam in 3 hours. Time management is important. Apical stop prep and cold lateral are expected. This is where I screwed up the most as they have switched to continuously tapering cone and warm vertical obturation here in Canada. Know the average lengths of all the teeth, the possible canal configurations and the probability of finding each configuration. Endo was my worst section.

I think that was it. The examiners are friendly, the questions are fair. Every candidate was extremely nervous (understandably). My biggest caution is not to try anything new in the exam. Don't do anything you haven't done 100 times in practice. Your first time is never that good, so don't let it be during the exam. I tried a few "firsts" in the endodontic clinic and it a) wasted a ton of time because it was unfamiliar and b) it looked terrible. I found stress management the hardest part of the test. I was so nervous I could hardly hold still during the first day of operative.

Most of the candidates in my group were currently working in the public dental system in Australia, I would say at least half of the candidates were working in the PDS. I found that the typodont teeth had differnt consistencies. The ones in crown and bridge were hard and cut like natural tooth. The class II amalgam teeth were standard dentoform teeth, medium softness. The complex amalgam tooth was very soft, many of the candidates had problems with this particular tooth. Don't overwork the tooth, plan the your retention and resistance form before you start preparation and don't nitpick too much or you will overcut the tooth. I made several mistakes in the operative clnic from overcutting because I was trying to make it just perfect. The problem is that you have so much time that you are tempted to keep improving your preps. In the real world you would finish these tasks in a 1-1.5 hours, and they give you 3.5 hours.

Be prepared to support your answers in the oral exams with references to journal articles or specific texts.

Otherwise, good luck

Echinopora ... congrats !!! 🙂

congrat for passing the final exam and wishing u all the best in your career in OZ.
I think there are dental graduates from some universities in the world that can work in Oz whithout taking preliminary exam and during 2 years they must pass the clinical and since you are a graduate from Alberta, why you didn't do this???
did you take any course here in Oz to help you prepare for the exam

sorry to disturb you with my questions

It's true that if you have a Canadian degree you can work in the public system, however wages in the public system are about half of what I make here in Canada, and the taxes are higher. From a financial standpoint it was just better for me to work here in Canada and go straight into the private sector in Australia.

I didn't take any courses in Australia. The material is the same as any Western dental board exam. Something like the WREB in the US is much harder than the ADC exam.

Good Luck

I'm currently reading the Oxford Handbook of Clinical Dentistry ... can't say I remember much of what I've read ... therefore, as soon as I'm finished I'll begin going over questions from past exams, so I'd know what fields of knowledge I'm weaker in.

Anyway ... you don't need to ace the exam ... you're expected to pass it - they say it's A, B or C (on a A to E scale) on the MCQ's (so I guess it's above 70%, right?) and 50% on the SAQ's ...
