Thank Drill...for answering my query.
I want to share my experiance of preliminary with all those who are preparing preliminaries.
1st of the exam is not difficult for those who study with understanding and clear their concepts. The 2nd thing is you have to be very careful about the availabe time during the paper. Dont think too much over the MSqs otherwise you will be left with some unattended in the end. Since there is no negative marking so try to attend all the MSQs. if you find a few MSQs which really needs thinking, you should attend them but also mark them on your question paper so if you get some time in the end, think over them again and correct them

Thanks Dr Melbourne,
Very good hints about the exam. How about the short answer questions? Are they difficult? Do we have enough time to complete them? :scared:
Appreciate any advice
Good luck on the clinical exam.

does anyone have the 1000mcqs and any idea on what books to refer to for the preliminary....pl mail me on [email protected] . thnx again....

HI LEO,

WELCOME TO MEMBERSHIP.
I HAVE POSTED 1000 MCQS TO ID.

sonpari and cacaums have asked about the short question answers.
what i would say is, this paper is more about clinical stuff like diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment planing and managment of the dental problems/diseases.
yes there is enough time to write 3 answers unless you don't write "unecessory stories". stick to what they have asked you.
There are total 5 questions.Always keep in mind that the 1st question is compulsory and then in the rest of four you have got the choice to do any 2. so u have to do a total of 3.
personally, I have found 'Odell' very useful as this books give you step by step managment of almost all the common clincial problems + it is an interesting book. by reading this book, you feel as if you are actually sitting in a clinic and attending the patient.
I hope, I cleared some of your queries. i am helping as much as I can as I myself have been through the same process so feel free to ask any thing about preliminary.
Cheers:hardy:

Thank you so much Dr Melbourne. I'm feeling better now because I'm reading the Odell already. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

For those who want to practice listening for OET Exam:
There is a ABC radio program called The Health Report that is very good listening and both audio and transcript can be downloaded from the website http://www.abc.net.au/rn/healthreport/default.htm

They talk about medical subjets that is very commom on the OET. Good stuff!

Q1073
The basic instrument formula consists of three units. The handle here has the instrument formula of 13-8-14. The number 13 indicates the width of the blade in tenths of a mm. The 13, therefore, represents 1.3mm. The second number, 8, represents the length of the blade in millimeters, that is, from the shank to the cutting edge. It is 8mm in this case. Fourteen represents the angle the blade makes with the long axis of the handle, or the plane of the instrument. This angle is expressed in "hundredths" of a circle or centigrade. To calculate the measurement of the angle, you place the instrument on the center of the circle and move it until the blade lines up with one line on the ruler. This measurement represents the angulation of the blade from the long axis of the handle, which is fourteen degrees in this case.

When the cutting edge of an instrument is at an angle other than a right angle to the length of a blade, a fourth unit is added to the basic three unit formula. This number is placed in the second position of the formula. The first number, 13, tells the width of the blade in tenths of a millimeter. The second number, 80, represents the angle that the cutting edge of the instrument makes with the long axis of the handle. The third number, 8, is the length of the blade; and the fourth number, 14, is the angle the blade makes with the plane of the instrument or the long axis of the handle. To measure the fourth number, the instrument is placed in the center of the measuring circle and moved to the left until the cutting edge lines up with one of the lines on the ruler; in this case, it is 80 degrees.

1. wrong. As part of restorative procedures required by adhesive dentistry, the smear layer must be removed, modified or impregnated by the resin to allow for bonding between the tooth and the restorative material
2. smear layer refers to the complex accumulation of organic and inorganic debris resulting from the mechanical preparation of a tooth surface.
3. All acidic drinks were able to statistically increase dentin permeability and to open dentinal tubules by removing the smear layer.
4. 1% sodium hypochlorite alone does not remove the smear layer and that there was no statistical difference between EDTA gel and EDTA solution in smear layer removal.
5. The smear layer comprises cutting debris, tooth particles, microorganisms, necrotic material, and other substances resulting from preparation, and typically includes a superficial layer on the surface of a prepared tooth along with a layer or layers that are packed into the adjacent dentinal tubules at varying depths up to about 40 μm.

Don't worry....you will pass this time. you just need to study more than the last time and with more understanding. I studied for 3 monthes full time and I passed it in 1st attempt in September 2007.
About your confusion about the grades in preliminary.......you pass if you secure A, B or C grades in 4 of 7 sectiones of the MCQs paper and 50% or more in the SAQ paper. may be you friend has got 3 Cs and 1 D or E. as you don't fail just becoz you have D or E in other sections.no mater what you get in the rest of the sections but if you secure Cs in 4 out of 7 sectiones , you pass the MCQs papers.

Hi Drill!
I am extremly sorry that I don't have the questions which you people are discussing, otherwise I would have given my comments. I passed my exam without these 1060 questions. I came to know about them during my exams, there every body was talking about it. Actually now I have got them but when I tele your question numbers with that of mine, they are diferent.
If you mention the questions in your post, then I can definetly give my comments.

Hi Dr. Imran!
1st of all there is no need to be confused about any thing. if you have decided to permanently settle in Australia, then just start the process. we all are here to help you.
The 2nd thing is do ur research about every thing as much as you can. what I mean is....net is full of information so what ever you need jusy go the website and read all whatever is written there.
3rd thing is.....if you wanna work as a dentist in Australia, you have to register with the ADC ( australian dental council). Its just like PMDC in Pakistan. To get registered , you have to clear 3 steps.
1) OET
2) Preliminary exam (some people call it step-1)
3) Clinial exam ( step-2)
Now the 1st two steps can be done in Islamabad. for the 3rd step you have to come to Australia.
The bridging courses...you don't need to do them at this stage.just start from the OET and then when once you strat the process , you will be getting more and more information along the way.
I am going to give you some usful web site , go there and thoroughly explore them ok:

For ADC: http://www.dentalcouncil.net.au/ you can always e-mail them or call them , they do reply.

some information about immigration: http://www.australianaustralia.com/page/Dentists/48

for OET:
http://www.kokken.go.jp/public/world/mirror/sunsite.anu.edu.au/language-australia/oet/aus.html

I hope , I cleared many of your queries. keep me remembered in your sincere prayers.
Cheers

hi melbourne

would you happen to know of clinical practise session offered by lectures or anything like that. Sot of supervised clinical sessions. I heard something like that is offered in melbourne probably by the same guys who offer aider. AIDER is a bit too expensive. I know dental hospitals can offer clinical practise session but in these, one will be on their own.

much appreciated

Dr. Melbourne :hardy:

I think you are doing a great job Dr Melbourne, you give real advice and very valuable information. I personally appreciate your effort. I think you are right that 1000 question are not very necessary. In a way past questions tend to narrow our studying to trying to answer the questions and ditract from acquiring essential dental knowlwedge. That makes us less than perfect dentists. I feel bad when someone say they only need question bank, boucher and odell to pass the exam. It kinda narrows dentistry to three items.

In as much as we need some questions, and odel, we still need to study wide and deep.

all the same this is a fantastic forum where I think one can get almost everything.

Hi.....
Well....yes, you are right that don't restrict yourselves to just a few books. Although, I admit that certian recomended books will definetly give you a alot of help. Even if you pass preliminary just by reading 2 or 3 books, you have to read alot for the clinical so why not study from the beggening...right?

about your query for Courses.......these are called "orientation course" or "bridging courses"
Here is some important information for you.
1) Melbourne OTC : the best course in the Australia. it is run by "Royal dental hospital" in Melbourne.it is 20 weeks course. the cost is 21000$. but 4 weeks is also available. go to their website and you will find all the required information.
2) AIDER: it is a 2-monthes extensive course. it is different fromt he Melbourne OTC. the venue is Toorak (Melbourne)it will cost you about 13000$. it is run by a nurse. you can go to its web site and get more information.
3) La trobe Uni. course ( a new start) the link is
http://www.dhsv.org.au/content.asp?z=2&c=7&p=152
There are also some other courses in other states but I don't know about them. i only know about Melbourne.

All the websites have got e-mails IDs.You can always send them e-mail and ask them any thing. they do reply.
Cheers :hardy:
Dr. Melbourne

I have just spoken to AIDER cordinator.

Aider full course 8 weeks cost $13 750. And she was saying one can do practise session on their own, using AIDER equipment and it costs about $80 per 3hrs session or about $100 with a demonstrator. However they need about 5 candidates to get a demonstrator.
