So recently I got a contract job at a medical company, which can potentially be pursued as a career. I want to submit an update letter to the adcoms of the schools I applied to and mention this new job, but I am worried that the adcoms might think I'm a little jumpy or have commitment issues if I am planning on leaving this job and going to med school summer/fall of 2016. What do you guys think?

No, this should be no problem. You should update when you've actually accomplished something, not right when you start a new job. Nobody's going to care if you've only started doing something healthcare related...

But, maybe if you had done it for a while (like two months or so,) then it could be a significant impact.

So you mean I shouldn't bring it up in the update letter because it's not an accomplishment yet?

I thought it would be beneficial to highlight it and the possible benefits for me as a potential medical student, particularly in terms of my exposure to those medical devices....

There are a few schools that haven't responded to me and I thought this might expedite that process or push my application to a more favorable light.

Maybe @Goro can give advice here.

Do you really think that the Admissions dean is going to run screaming out of his/her office, yelling "@LizzyM, we have to accept this kid; s/he just started a new job!!!!!"

??????

Lol, I was intending on sending an update letter to schools that haven't offered me interviews. And no, that wasn't the highlight of my update letter. It would have probably been my ideal position had I not wanted to go to medical school. I thought it could be beneficial to bring it up that I got a great position and highlight it among the other activities and experiences that have been keeping me busy since I completed my secondaries. So, no point in even bringing it up in the update letter?

I think as an update letter, you should write about how you're really interested in this school, and the things you've done to prove continued interest for this school. Maybe talked to some of the faculty members, classmates, gone to conventions offered by school, etc. Highlight the things this specific school does for you.

The other way is if you've actually shown significant improvement, like improved grades or MCAT.

The update letter is to show that you're very interested in the school still. You need to really tailor it to fit the school you want to go to. You can write about this new job, but it won't give a significant impact.

Update letters are generally for those who are waitlisted...not for those who weren't offered an interview.

Show off a publication or a semester full of As, and that's worth an update.

A new job....no.

Thanks! What you said makes a lot of sense. I just thought considering that I haven't heard back from certain schools for several months, it would make sense for me to update them.

Likewise...I haven't heard back from PCOM and NSU. My stats are higher than average for those schools with a 30+ MCAT and significant research experience. I have been complete since end of July.

Sometimes I feel like they're regionally biased.

Fair enough...yeah I'm thinking about retaking some courses or the MCAT this Spring in case I don't get in this year.

Yeah....they probably are. I have a few friends in the same boat as you with PCOM with also killer stats, but it looks like you already got into Rowan 😀 Congrats!

Thank you! I would've chosen Rowan over PCOM because of the tuition, but hearing nothing from PCOM is a little bit disappointing.

That is great then! Yeah, I know what you mean...most of the schools have been silent since submitting my secondaries and I wanted to take some action.
