Anyone hear stories of adcoms looking through applicants' Facebook profiles? I've heard that companies have started to do this, and just hope it's not the case with med schools 😳

lol i certianly hope not

However i do know that one kid couldnt become a resident assitant beacause there was some "questionable" stuff on his facebook profile.

So i geuss they could check, its not that hard...

Really? How do they get access to the profiles? I thought you could only view profiles of students from your own school unless you listed others as friends. Can the adcoms get access a different way?

i believe there is a privacy setting that can disable one's ability to access you accept if they are a friend or friend of a friend. By default, however, anyone can access your facebook page.

A while back there was this girl at USC who left her baby in a dumpster. The LA Times ran a story that included her facebook picture and some of her personal info. So...I guess it wouldn't be hard for adcoms to look at facebook profiles if they wanted to.

ADCOMS would need an account for your school in order to view your profile. If you are so scared, just set your profile privacy settings so that only your friends will be able to view your profile.

there is a now infamous internet story about a girl who made a marijuana reference in her facebook profile and it somehow circulated around town and reached her grandmother. this isn't just an urban myth, either - it was reported a few different places. can't find the link anymore.

This too, has crossed my mind. They could also be checking myspace....

Ha ha, I just logged on to add a link to my MySpace page. Now that I'm accepted I don't care anymore. 😛 But I don't think I have anything on there that could get me kicked out of school or anything!

I ain't got nothin' to hide either. If anything, my facebook profile would show that I have a healthy social life aside from my obsession with SDN...

apparently schools are investigating some students...google it...theres a lot articles bout it...ex: 18 yr olds showing pics of emselves drinking and such...

A dean of admissions mentioned the AAMC was considering conducting background checks as part of the AMCAS application. I'm not sure how seriously they were looking into this, but it could happen in the future. Some schools already conduct background checks once you are admitted and submit the deposit.

as vic would say, we watch them...now they are watching back

now I'm kinda paranoid. I have all sorts of inside jokes among my friends on my facebook, and I'm married to my old roommate on there as a joke. There's nothing inappropriate, but I keep my social life separate from my professional and student life. Oh well, doesn't really matter.

Did anyone else just freak out and delete a bunch of stuff from their facebook profile?

Haha how sad. I have tons of offensive quotes from Sarah Silverman and I'm keeping them until break's over. You guys must be really stupid to think ADCOMS get together in their meetings and look up people's facebook profiles. I'd assume they got better things to do... 🙄

No man. This is a serious threat to my future. Anybody know anything about face transplants? I heard they did one in France recently.

I think so.. although since staff members can create facebook accounts, maybe they're using inside connections 🙄

Heh. Perhaps I should edit my wall before I apply 😉

Hooray for conspiracy theories..

Did you know adcoms actually send an electromagnetic signal into our brains to gauge how bad we want to go to med school??? its true, they bounce it off the crazy people's aluminum hats in order to get to us...true story.

doesn't wearing an aluminum hat act as a filter for the EM signals so that the adcoms get a clearer signal?

Nope. I looked over my profile out of curiosity, to see what someone might think about it, but I think it indicates that I'm a fairly normal guy.

:squint: hey, now......

I'm a pretty chill dude.....as long as you get me away from my books. 😛

I would think that nobody has anything terribly incriminating on their facebook that would really prevent them from getting into medical school. I mean what could really be considered questionable? That the applicant has a social life?

Yeah, I was pretty much kidding. I think that having a lot of references to drugs would kind of be a problem though. I'm very doubtful that ad coms would put that much energy into investigating their applicants though.

I know for a fact that at my school University officials and police have used Facebook against students. Professors have also chastised derogatory groups. Wouldn't be too much of a stretch for adcoms to use it.

What kind of a Nazi school do you go to? Freedom of speech anyone?

weed would be my most likely guess, or if every one of your pictures shows you completely intoxicated or in compromising situations, but in general, I can't imagine who would glean much info from your profile.
