Hi all. I have the unusual case of applying to medical school at the same time as my brother. Im a non-traditional student age 26, he's traditionial applicant 21 and he's taking April MCAT.

I've been helping him every step of the way. Now Im worried that if we apply to the same schools it might detract from our chances. Our applications will look differently (no similarity in GPA, major, undergrad school, age, career objectives, ECs.) How do med schools feel about relatives in the same class?

We will have to apply to the same state schools. What should we consider when applying to the others?

HI...well I guess that I havent give this much thought, but that couldve been my situation as I am a 25 y-o nontrad and my sis is 22 y-o...BUT she went into nursing. Interesing, nonetheless.
ANYWAY>>> My gut says this wont matter that your sib is applying at the same time to the same schools because as you alluded to you are very separate people. Some schools might thing it is nice and I have heard of someone's wife or husband getting into the same school...NOT to say that the sig other wouldnt have gotten in on their own merit, BUT I dont think med schools are out to separate families.
THAT BEING SAID....I dont think it will matter much in the case of siblings...what might matter more is if one of you gets into a school that you both really want while the other sib doesn't...Uh-Oh.
😱 😱

Best of Luck to you and your sib!!!!

Thanks for the insight e-spin! Yes its funny that you would have had a similar situation. So you talked your Sister out of the field all together? 🙂 I hadnt thought of that approach. (just kidding)

Are you applying this summer?

Yeah, I am in the middle...or toward the end...of applying. I am waitlisted in 5 Schools...UGH. Just waiting til the WLs start moving!!!
My sister decided that she didngt want to go through ALL the applying and ALL the schooling...she likes it though!!!

ANYWAY.

GOOD LUCK!!!!
😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

If you have a pretty common last name, it will never be noticed, and even if it is pretty unusual most adcomms wouldn't notice it. They'll probably say things like "Mouskevitz.... That name sounds really familiar,"but they'll think it's some old classmate they're remembering or that they just recognize it from your application. I'm serious; my sister and I tried out for the same choir together back a few years ago. There were only a couple hundred applicants, and our last name isn't Smith or Brown or anything like that. Our auditions were within an hour of each other, and it took until a month into choir practices before the director said, "You guys look a lot alike, are you related?"

I totally agree with e-spin. When there was a chance I was going to be applying the same year with my bro, my premed advisors were not at all concerned. In fact I know a set of twins that ended up at the same school.

Good luck to you both 😀

at the University of Michigan dental class of 2006, there are like 3 sets of identical twins in the class. Yup one is black, one is indian and other is white. Talk about diversity

I am currently applying with my younger brother this year. At the few schools that we both interviewed at, not once was my brother mentioned, and my brother told me that I was never mentioned as well. I think that each applicant is evaluated as an individual, regardless of any siblings etc.
