Science and cumulative GPA should be 3.50-3.60 and above. MCAT should be 30 and up. And yes, EC's are VERY important.

the higher the better for gpa/mcat. gpa below 3.5 or mcat below 30 starts to work against your chances. gpa above 3.8 or mcat above 35 starts to look really good. having a number of extracurriculars is important, and med schools are more and more expecting to see at least some medical volunteer and shadowing work.

Shadowing, maybe. Volunteering? No, I think charging someone who is already giving up their time for free is a little ridiculous don't you think? Especially since not all volunteers at hospitals are pre-med students 😛

Average for MD matriculents is like a 3.63 and a 31 or something. DO schools are slightly lower. Different schools put different weight on extracurricular activities. From what I see on SDN most applicants have 50+ hours each of shadowing and volunteering. Research is not required unless you're applying to research heavy school or you want to do an MD/PHD.

Haha this is kind of already happening. Many of the volunteer programs out there (especially abroad) charge you a lot of money to participate.
