I am not exactly sure what admissions counselors are, but the general consensus around here is that you should definitely call schools you weren't accepted to in order to see what you can do to improve your app (if you haven't been accepted anyway else) for the next cycle. If that's what they do, then I would absolutely say it will be helpful to give them a call.
