I'm getting ready to apply for the next cycle of ADSAS and have no idea what the heck i'm doing at all. My advisor is a complete ***** and I'm worried I'm gonna have problems getting through the stuff because I half don't know what to expect.
I don't really understand the process, i guess which could either make me really dumb or really misinformed. So you can send your ADSAS out on the 1st of June? How long does it take to fill out? and then after you fill it all out and all that stuff, what else is left to do? I have the impression you fill it out once and then its over, which is probably wrong. When do you hear for interviews usually?(if ever lol)

I dunno, basically I'm just nervous about the application process, and how it all unfolds. If anyone has insight on my questions or just how they applied and how it was, I would appreciate the info.
Thanks

relax 😎

if you are already asking these questions in january, the process will be easy for you. use the search function on SDN or just hang around until mid-May when AADSAS opens it's highly efficient and user-friendly machine for 2007.

June 1st is fairly early, which is good, especially if you're advisor is a *****. Start asking now for letters of recommendation from old professors. Each school is different about collecting these. At my school, there is a pre-health advising committee that all the letters are sent to. After they received my letters, I arranged an interview with them and they wrote a committee letter. They mailed the committee letter and letters of rec. DIRECTLY to the schools (which REALLY helps not going through AADSAS). Most schools say they prefer getting them through AADSAS, but none complained about getting mine separately and they seemed to get them A LOT faster. Having them sent directly to the schools also helped me to avoid the problem of AADSAS losing the LOR's. If you do a quick search on here, you'll see that AADSAS loses some of the LOR's and that can really put a hold on your application.

Ok, on to step 2. If you haven't already, take the DAT by mid-may. You can take this any day of the year pretty much. It's offered on a computer at various testing centers. The AADSAS website offers information on where to register and such for that.

Step 3. Mid-May-Start filling out the AADSAS application. It's online so they don't send it to you. If you want to have your app. submitted on June 1st, this leaves you 2 weeks to fill out the app. Have ALL college transcripts sent to AADSAS in mid-may. This helps cut down on waiting time as well. You can start working on your personal statement now so that you have it ready when you fill out the app.

Step 4. June 1st. Submit application. Have your advisor send in LOR's. Make sure DAT scores are being sent to all schools you are applying at. Wait forever ("4-8 weeks" but mine took 9 weeks and others took even longer) for AADSAS to process your app. If you get it in the beginning of June, it will probably take less time because most applicants wait til late-July through Sept. to submit apps.

You'll probably start getting secondary applications (some schools have another small app. to fill out) and fees in the mail. Send these back ASAP. A couple weeks later, you will probably hear about interviews. This timeline varies though. I submitted my app. in late July, had it sent to schools late Sept., heard from schools the first week of Oct. about fees, and then about 2 weeks later I got interviews. All 4 of my interviews were scheduled for November (I then rescheduled one of my last choices). On December 1st, dental schools start letting people know if they were accepted! The first batch of acceptees has about 45 days to accept the offer, then the schools lets others know if they were accepted. This cycle repeats until the class is full.

For now, you have time to strengthen your app. Get shadowing hours in, work on your personal statement, study for the DAT (buy a Kaplan book), and research schools. Researching schools and figuring out which are the best fit for you before applying can save you a lot of money in the long run. There's more info here https://aadsas.adea.org/aadsas2006/logon.html. Good luck!

yes and start writing and complete your personal statement. the app doesn't take long to fill out. last year the personal statement part said:

"Your Personal Statement should address why you desire to pursue a dental education and how a dental degree contributes to your personal and professional goals.

You are encouraged to compose your statement in a text-only word processor (e.g., Notepad), review your statement for errors, then cut and paste the final version into the text box above. Click the Save button and return to the Personal Statement to review the formatting of your text. You are limited to approximately 1 page (4500 characters, including spaces).

Some formatting characters used in programs like Word (angled quotes, accents, special characters) will not display properly. Carefully review your final text and to make the necessary corrections to the format."-AADSAS Dental School Application (2006 cycle), Personal Statement Section

just don't worry. submit your app early, get your transcripts mailed early (like before you leave your school) and everything else will fall into place. if worse comes to worse with your letter you can always ask your school to not only send a letter to AADSAS but also to each school individually (if it's done later).

Where do I ask the LOR from dentist to be sent to? Should I give them a postage stamp envelope and have them send it to AADSAS mid may. What do you all think?

Just give your dentist a self addressed envelope. The address is on the AADSAS website. Give your dentist about a month to write the letter so take this into consideration when deciding when you want your application completed. 🙂

The personal statement only needs to be 1 page long? Wow...

If you want to see exactly what you will have to deal with, then fill out an application for this cylce or at least scan through it. You can go through all the steps and see what they are asking for (ADDSAS). Just don't submit it, this way you can get a better idea what the application process is like. Here is the link to create a new application.

https://aadsas.adea.org/aadsas2006/newaccount.html

If you never submit it, then it will just be deleted at the end of this cycle. But you'll have a good idea what you will see come May 15th or so.

Good luck.
