Does anyone have experience or know anyone that has been able to leave the Army with a few years left on a contract? Contract was signed only for bonus not because of commitment from education/residency. I do have over 20 years. It is just time to go and with the Army downsizing I figure I would try to retire.

I know of exactly one person who was allowed to repay a bonus and retire.

The only reason that happened was because when he signed the bonus paperwork, the Navy screwed up the date calculations, told him he'd be able to retire in 2013 - and that's what his written contract said. Then, at some point in 2011 someone rechecked it and emailed him saying, "oops, sorry, we did the concurrent/consecutive math wrong and you're really obligated through 2014" ...

It took him more than a year, and the involvement of attorneys, flag officers, and multiple reviews and appeals before the Navy grudgingly allowed him to repay part of the bonus and retire on time in 2013. It was the Navy's mistake, but the Navy's position was essentially "even though we gave you a written contract, that contract was in error and illegal and you should've caught the mistake yourself."

If you're just having 2nd thoughts about taking that bonus and figure it'd be nice to retire sooner rather than later, I'm going to go out on a limb and say: no.

That's an interesting story. There's a gi doc now who I bet would love that option but it hasn't happened. No harm in asking though.
