So I'm an MS4 HPSPer and my husband is trying to figure out how much money to put aside for our health savings account. It's my understanding that once I begin active duty, my meds will be paid for. Is there a formulary or something that I need to check to make sure that the stuff I'm on is covered?

When you come on active duty your medical expenses will be very near (if not at) zero. There are very few medications you cannot get via the military pharmacy. Some require additional paperwork, but in the end, cost you nothing.

The big issue will be if you and your husband want to be seen by a civilian provider. Some do, but for active duty it is frequently a hassle and you pay out of pocket. Active duty are typically assigned a primary care manager, so we often have little choice for that. Consider things like glasses, alternative medicine and elective procedures and how much you need those. They are not covered by TRICARE so could fall under the savings account.

Active Duty is covered, but dependents have to pay. They can be seen by Optometry (free eye exam), but they have to take their rx offbase or to the exchange and pay for it.

While a HPSP will the health insurance cover my daughter and I throughout the year or just when I am getting officer's pay? Since my soon to be x husband is reqiured to cover her insurance will she be able to have both insurance?

While on HPSP, you don't have Army insurance. You have to go through your school's insurance program (or some other private insurer). The HPSP will reimburse you for the value of the required plan at your school for YOURSELF only. Make your x pay for your daughter's health insurance, b/c she won't be covered. You can, hypothetically, get on Tricare for your ADT's in the summers. I don't know how likely or unlikely that is to happen.

slight thread hijack but in the same vein: What is the military's stance on Chiropractic? When I was walking around WRAMC I saw a big chiropractic building/clinic and I was wondering what the coverage is (active duty)? Can an AD member be covered for regular adjustments either on base if there's a clinic or through an outside provider?

My mom, active duty, regularly sees a DC on the AFB where she is stationed.

Many MTFs have Chiropractors on contract. AD members may use them with consults from their PCM. Family members are not usually allowed to go.

Thanks for the good info. On a somewhat related note, when I start my internship, my husband and son will still be living most of the time in the midwest, nowhere close to any Army posts. For Tricare to cover them, do they have to be seen by a military doc, or is there any way to get civilian doctor visits covered?

They could either sign up for TRICARE prime and find a TRICARE approved PCM in their area or go TRICARE standard and do the 80/20 thing. If you do the standard, the medical savings account comes back into play.
