Anyone else feel that, as an MSTP applicant, you're just getting waved through the whole application process? I love it...secondary invites, interview invites, everything seems to come quicker and with less of a hassle.

If you had posted this last week, I would have said you were insane... but based on the the number of interviews I've gotten in the past week, I might have to agree with you. And it's definitely not because I'm a superstar. Still, I wouldn't say I was waved through. I still had to write dozens of essays and spend lots of $$. I do feel that my nail biting No Interview period was briefer than I expected.

I just hope the ADCOMs are as speedy in handing out offers of acceptance. Is anyone else thinking they may hear this weekend?

Nope... don't have my first interview until next week (NEXT WEEK!! AHHHH). I really hope I have an acceptance in hand by Thanksgiving though, so I can enjoy my year off more fully than I am now.

Yea, I kinda lagged at the start of this process, so I just finished up secondaries and don't have my first interview till the end of the month. *sigh*

As far as adcom speeds though: most I applied to seem to say that they'll let everyone know their accept/reject decision in march (although there is often a caveat for "a select few highly qualified individuals" who they may accept sooner). I did notice that Cornell is on top of their $hit and is going to let all phphd applicants know if they are in (or got bumped into the regular md pool) by early december.

Yeah...So I was complete at my first places around Sept. 22 (recommenders and pre-med office were being sloooow) and right now, I got nothin'. Here's hoping things will change soon!

I'm sure you'll hear good news soon. I was complete at schools starting that same week, and I didn't hear anything until about 10 days ago, at which point several interview invites came practically at once.

🙂 I hope so.

On related news, I just got an e-mail from Hopkins. Both their MD and MD/PhD have rejected my butt. Oh well...It doesn't sting as much as I thought, but I would feel better if I had an interview for which to prepare.

How are your interviews coming along?

Count it a blessing. Nobody actually wants to live in Baltimore anyway. 😉

I haven't gone to any interviews yet. My first one (NYU) is 10/21. I'm being uncharacteristically type-A and have completed data sheets for each interview with details on the schedule, highlights of the program and med school, a synopsis of the director's or program's mission statement, and varous other info, including questions I want to ask. I'm trying to overprepare so that I don't freak out. I'm currently reading my thesis to refresh on details of my major research project, and even though it was a year-long labor of love that I finished just 5 months ago, most of it now sounds like gibberish to me.

Bitter much? Don't be. There is a certain degree of randomness in the selection process. It's a common experience to easily get in one great school but get rejected by another equally great school. A rejection says nothing about one as a person.

In Baltimore's defense, it's not the greatest city in the world, but it has some charms. It's inexpensive to live here, there are great cultural events, and surprise surprise, fun places to hang out. The only truly disappointing thing is the lack of coffee and tea shops. Location is important, but don't let that be the only deciding factor. I may not be totally in love with Baltimore (yet), but I am so glad I'm here because of the quality of teaching, clinical exposure, and my awesome classmates.

Good luck to you all!

Aww your head is cut in half. Can't we see the rest?

Stalker!

I try to stay somewhat anonymous. You could find me on the facebook if you are stalkerly enough, or you'll meet me when you interview at Hopkins. I never miss those free lunches. I mean, opportunities to meet applicants. If you have enough west coast pride, I might even consider hosting you (so far all the interviewees have been from the east coast... what's up with that?!).

I'm not bitter. 😀 Fortunately, I haven't gotten any rejections yet, but when I do, bitterness will surely not be my response. I was just making a joke to cheer up themadscientist. And I'm well aware of Baltimore's charms and lack thereof, and I reserve the right to hate it.

Yeah, what's up with that? I'd love to interview w/ Hopkins. Maybe they have something against Californians? 🙁

Hopkins has nothing against Californians. Question is, what do Californians have against Baltimore? 😉

i have nothing against baltimore, actually i think it would be nice to live in a place where i can rent a one bedroom apartment for less than $1200! although i've never been to baltimore, i'm originally from the midwest so i appreciate the "charm", affordability, space, and friendly atmosphere of smaller cities. enjoy baltimore and don't listen to the big city folks 😀

I know why...grace is there!!!! j/k!

I think that Baltimore does have something against Californians because I didn't get an interview there and neither did my friends. I guess that they know there's no chance we'd ever go!! Actually, I might have just because Ben Carson is there 😀

We do have Californians here, I promise! And they have nothing against me (I think)!

A couple of my friends have Ben Carson as their preceptor. How cool is that?!

Tons. Listen though, I'll keep an open mind and give you guys *one* weekend to prove to me otherwise. Hopkins is the best school for me, and I'd hate to have to go somewhere else (like so many other bioeng kids from cali) because of location.

baltimore blows.

did you know 17% of mstp applicants last year were from california?

😱 WOW!!!!!!! 😱

Ok, maybe I will come visit you.

You are just jealous of the fact that I only have classes from 8 to 1, and you have classes from 8 to 5.

Baltimore is not so bad. It could use a few thousand more Starbucks though.

Yes, Ted, you should visit me!

Speaking of Hopkins, I interviewed there the end of Sept and it wasn't that bad. They're demolishing a whole area around it to make a biotech park, and the place my host lived in was amazing. Also, don't forget how close it is to DC, Philly and NY, it's not too hard to find fun.

Gwang I probably met you if you were at the lunch, thanks for answering my questions. Btw, when do we get to hear back?

Last year the first wave of decisions came around late November. I would expect it to be the same this year. Good luck! If you have any more questions, just ask!
