Any students here or know of classmates who had advanced dexterity (playing an instrument, fine motor etc) - how much did it benefit in labs? Did you finish early to have more time studying?

What if you don’t have the hand skills?

Yes, but eventually everybody catches up to you.

Unless you've done the actual lab work, working at a dental office or lab, it doesn't really. Fine motor control is good and all, but learning how to do the prep, work in confined space, etc, comes different to everyone.

The biggest learning curve for many is figuring out how to critique, correctly, your own work and make adjustments.

The only people who are really killing it speed-wise are the people who had previously done the work, not an abstract analogue.

With the advent of digital impressions, and programs within this modality to provide an unbiased evaluation of tooth preparations, it should be easier for all students to improve and adjust their hand eye coordination to provide ideal preps in pre clinic. Not using this modality means relying on biased evaluations from peers, instructors, etc. The computer does not lie. Of course real teeth in a real mouth are often not ideal, and that is why we are doctors, and are taught to make decisions.
