Hi perplexed,
I called Indiana U admissions people today. It seems that they still havent finalized yet. But, the director of admissions did say that the admissions comittee will be meeting and making a final decision on wednesay( feb 27th). So, I will know the result late this week or next week at the latest. I am kind of keeping my fingers crossed.

Was just reading the message board and decided to drop a few lines. Are you saying that calling the schools one has applied to can help increase ones' chances of being considered? I've actually applied to BU and UPenn. I've done the UPenn interview and am hoping for the best and keeping my fingers crossed. I'm also trying to be open minded so that I won't be too dissappointed if I don't get in. I guess I'll be asking for more advice later. Till then, thumbs up for the counselling job you've taken up!

But its always nice to keep in touch with them ( if not anything else, they'll know WE ARE ALIVE HERE ... 😀 )You can either call them up or e-mail them once in a while.

But in UPENN even that is not always possible ( thnx to Dr NL 😡 ). <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" /> After the interview nothing else really matters ...but it is still important to send them thank you letters.
Its good that you are keeping your options open, just banking on one school can be very very stressful. If possible apply to all the schools that still have their admissions open.
I am free now ... ask away all you want , if I have an answer I'll definitely put it here.
Ya . I've found a counselling job for myself, haven't I ?
I know how difficult it can be to get all the info esp when you have no one to approach or guide you .. I've been there ... done that .. So this is just my bit to help you guys pull thru . I sincerely hope that I have been of help & will be of help atleast to some of you.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Which schools still have their applications open? I actually got a letter from BU yesterday requesting that I come for an interview. They said the class is almost full and I might be put on an alternate list ( I guess that means even if I'm taken I might not get in till next year). What school are you going to attend?

Check with NOVA, Illnois. ( Dont cancel your interview with BU, there might be candidates who might withdraw in the last minute , also if u are put in the waiting list this yr , they'll give u preference the next yr.)

Also check UCLA ( deadline march 15th ). You have to be US resident or citizen to be eligible.
 
Today I called up Indiana U admissions people again. They were supposed to tell the results today. The person in the admission department told me that the comittee met yesterday and they are stalled. What exactly does stalled means?. Does it mean I have hope or there is absolutely no chance in hell?. Apparently, they haven't yet filled even one of the 5 positions offered. I wonder why they are taking so long to fill up 5 positions?. Meanwhile, it is killing me. I just wish they will tell yes or no. Getting fed up.

Thank you for your reply and PM. I just wish they would get it over with either way. I am an Indiana resident ( have been in Indiana for the past 6 years) with green card. I am eligible for the resident tuition fee and my husband has a good job here and cannot move. I am also in the family way and the best bet for me would be to join here. Hence, I did not apply to any other school. If I really dont get it this year, maybe I will apply to other schools next year. I hope and pray that I dont have to do that.
How about u?. How long have you been here. By the sound of your posts, I guess you havent been long in the US. And already you have many acceptances under your belt right?. That is really great. Good luck to you in whichever program you choose to attend.
 
Oh! I forgot to tell that I got my green card last year. Hence, long delay between coming to the US and going to school. Getting my green card coincided with the starting of the IU advanced standing program was very fortunate. Otherwise, I would have had no option but to apply to other schools.

Thanks for your encouragement. I am done with the nausea part. 🙂 Thank god. On a different topic, I dont mean to pry. I saw one of your earlier post that said that you are getting International loan from Teri. Is it the kind of loan offered without the citizen or permanent resident's cosignature?. The reason I didnt join any advanced standing program till now was because I thought that getting a loan without a green card or without citizen or permanent resident's signature was nil (even for private loans). I hope I havent wasted so much time because of this. Please, enlighten me on this. By the way, how did your interview with UCSF go?.
p.s - I noticed that at the bottom of your post that " from canada". I didnt notice that before. My bad.

i just got an interview call from UOP and was wondering if any advanced standing student has been/or going to be interviewed there.i will probably be in the last pool of candidates.what kind of reputation does it have apart from being an extremely expensive school?! any input on the technical exam?

It went very well. Its a good school. The prac's is important so is the interview. Try to prepare a lil bit for the prac's ( we discussed that a while back if you remember). If you can, try to register for the practice session prior to the interview.Its $60/- or so for that. UOP usually select 5 candidates from each batch.

i think uop will be a better choice than nyu so i'll try to put in my best for the tech test and interview.apparently the tuition fee for both works out the same which gave me the impression that uop's 2 yr program is expensive....but i have realised here that this profession is like running a buisness.its all about money!
 
Though the total amt looks huge. UOP is one of the cheapest schools (for adv students ..),& its a very good one too.

Do you have statistics of the costs (tuition, living exp., etc) of the different Adv. Stand. programs? I am joining BU's program in August, and I would like to now how expensive is this school compared with other options. I only applied to BU and Tufts because my husband works here (Boston); but after reading your post I am curious how expensive is BU when compared with other (cheaper-!) alternatives.

Just for reference, total BU's budget for the first year is around 67K (tuition + living exp); the second year is lower, around 55K.

All the private schools that offer advanced standing program is very expensive. Only the state schools offer cheaper fees compared to the private schools. For ex, IU School of dentistry offers adv standing program and the tuition fees is 28,196$ per year. When compared to BU the fees is cheaper I think. IU also offers 3 year, 2 year, and even 1 year program based on the assessment of candidate's skills. The only catch with state schools is that very few positions are offered. IU offers only 5 seats every year. The competetion is very tough. The cost of living in Indianapolis is also very cheap. Hope that helps

Certainly IU looks cheaper than BU! But , as you said, all the schools that offer the Advanced Standing program are expensive.

Sometimes I wonder whether it makes sense to study 2 more years (vs. not doing so and taking California's test!) cause the investment is huge (140K in 2 years). And I don't know anything about the job market for dentist that finishes Adv. Stand. programs. That makes me think about the next questions (I am sure that perplexed will help me here!) 😛

1. Is it easy to find a (GOOD!!) job after graduation??

2.How much should we expect to earn?? Is there any difference between students that finish regular programs and the adv. std. ones?

3. Is it easy to find a job in ANY state (I know that some states like NY require citizenship, and the prospect of ending up living in Arizona (no offenses here) or in the middle of nowhere does not appeal to me!

I feel the job market for advanced standing dentist is same for regular programmed dentist. Its how good you are that would determine your success after graduation.
 
Here's what I think ( this is just what I heard pls dont take my word for it & in the future if u hear something totally diff pls let us all know 😎 )

Yes.. you'll find a job .. but it'll take a while before you get what you want .. :wink: It also depends on which place you are looking for a job ... Remote(rural) place have more vacancies usually.

No, I dont think there's a diff once you graduate, you won't get a very good pay for a while ( until they think you are competent & you can do the job at a normal pace ( their normal pace 😀 ).

NY doesnt req citizenship as far as I know . All you need to do is give the licensing exam in the state you want to practice ( there are a few expections to that , Iam not familiar with that ).

Once you graduate from IUPUI can u practice anywhere in the US ? ( I've already taking it for granted that u r in ....that's a good sign, isnt it ? )

I cant help feeling this way . Iam I the only one trying to share info here...(along with the few more ppl , thnx guys )... It would really be great if all of us could share info & help each other out .. I dont know ...Iam just thinking aloud.

Thanks for your confidence in me. I am not so sure. IU gives first preference to candidates who are faculty there, who are doing postgraduate program there and then only residents of Indiana. I only hope your words will come true. Sure, you can prcatice anywhere in the US once you graduate from IU. It is like any other advanced standing program. Only you have to take the regional licensing boards of the state you intend to practice.

Personally, I think going through the program is better than just taking the california boards.
Because, then you will be bound to practicing only in California. You cant practice elsewhere. Also, you wont get the respect you deserve, same as you get when you complete your DDS.
This is just my opinion. What's wrong with going to a rural place to practice?. Rural places are the best places to bring up kids, cost of living is cheaper and you get more respect. This is what I have personally seen with many foreign trained physicians who prcatice in rural areas. I assume it would be the same with foreign trained dentists. In cities, the competetion is very tough with regard to jobs. Where the competetion is high, I think preference would be given to candidates who have undergone the regular DDS program. If anyone who knows different please feel free to correct me. Anyway, good luck to you.

Good luck.•••••It seems that the test is very important. I have an interview invitation from UOP also. But I think I am going to give up, because I have not practiced dentistry for many years. I have no way to have a good performance in the test. Can anybody (Perplexed, please) give me advice whether I should go for it or not? 😕

GO FOR IT
Register for the practice session, try to contact your local dentist & ask him /her if you can practice. Even if you can't practice its alright, do your interview well.
If you dont get it, so what ?? It'll be an experience in many ways. Just go for it . It'll help you in the long run .

(BTW :- if u have a dental school close by .. ask them to help you out .)

I've been trying to find rankings for dental schools, but it seems that there is no ranking available. Do you know any way to rank Dental schools, especially the ones that offer the Advanced Standing Program???? Which school is 1st or 2nd tier????

As of now, NYU said that they are full, and that they will not take a decision on my application until they have a vacancy, and BU has been a real pain. Kevin Acone, does not reply to emails, phone calls, whatever.
Anyways, are there anybody who has applied late and has not heard from BU yet? Anyone knows what the status is for this year? Any learned opinions on my position?

BU will contact you if they have seat available for you ..that's for sure .

Hi all,
I am back. I called IU and learnt that I have been accepted into the advanced standing program. They haven't told me whether it is a 2 year or a 3 year program though. I am over the moon and very very thrilled. I have to apply for FAFSA. I cant wait to start my program and study hard.

due to my particular situation i can apply for the program which start in 2004 academic year.
so i am preparing now for part 1 exam

can i apply for the program year earlier like predental student does a year earlier?
(i heard that applying earlier is possible for predent and med student)

i can't be sure the question is understandable to you.

NO advantage comes from applying for the program an year earlier. You will have to pay an application fee the first time you submit your application form & then for re-activation you'll have to pay another fee ( the equal amt ) very few schools do not req re-activation fee.
Most schools also req the part 1 NDB scores even before they can review your file.
There are schools that will accept your application form provided you take the exam before the interview or soon after.

Hope this has helped clear up your doubts.

i wondered that if i am eligible for the acceptance (of course, after they review all my documets including my part 1 score, my dental school gpa,etc), i can get interview invitation also a year earlier and get acceptance also year earlier.

is this same with what you understand perplexed?

From what I gather, you want to know if you can actually get accepted a year before you can actually join the course , right?
Yes you can .. I dont know how many schools do that thou ,,,but it certainly is an option... You'll have to pay a deposit of about $1000 ( after you get accepted )or more.... Not all schools have this option, you'll have to contact each school individually ... I also dont think they like to entertain such options... Its definitely not encouraged by them.

I agree with perplexed. Not all schools allow you to hold the seat. As far as I know NYU, Boston, does that. But, I am not too sure. Best thing is to ask the schools directly before you start applying and avoid wasting a lot of money. Many schools offer regular DDS program offer that way. I am not sure about the advanced standing program though. Good luck.
To any advanced standing program applicant with young babies,
I was just wondering how advancing standing student with infants and newborns manage the program as well as having to look after baby. Is it hard?. Or is it manageable?. My due date is somewhere in end of June and I might be starting the program on in the mid-late July. I am going to try and get 2 weeks of maternity leave. If unable to do so, will it be tough to manage?. Thanks a bunch.

My personal fav is the lounge .( also the spouse & partner section ). I have no experience when it comes to babies, sorry.. 🙁 Iam looking forward to your advice when it comes to that & when the time comes .... 😀
