Hi perplexed,docie&others

You guys are really a great help with so much info regarding advanced student admissions.i gave part-1 in dec got 89%,must be ok score its intimidating seeing so many with 90's.Itseems that score is important but not the only thing to get good school(correct me if wrong).i have applied fot UCONN,BU,SUNY,&UPENN after going through your posts i'm rethinking of applying to NYU.what are my chances of getting admission for this fall.

Congrats merl! Good going !
I would apply to as many schools as possible ( may be not NYU), but that's me. :)

You dont have to apply to all the space based schools thou,as space based schools are extrrrrrrremely picky, & you never actually know when space becomes available, & sometimes they wont have seats to offer.

Iam sure you'll get accepted, just apply within the deadlines.( please dont wait for the dealines as most schools have a rolling addmission , ie first come first basis).

Hi Everyone,
Thanks Perplexed and Docie. It was really reassuring to know that ppl with 79-82 have got in.I know that I have missed deadlines of most schools. But I was in any case planning to apply for 2003.Perplexed,could u please tell me which schools were u talking about.
Mehr,I think u have a great score. And u have a very good chance of getting in.
I haven't decided yet whether I will be retaking Part 1 or not.Actually last year I got married and came here.Since I was new to the place and also newly married,I thought that I will not be prepared in July and so postponed it to Dec.I think that was the biggest mistake.Because even by taking it in Dec I didnot get good scores.
However, ppl have really scared me by telling me of folks who didnot do too well on the retake. On the contrary, they flunked. And that is worse.
Anyway, one of my friends got into Boston. When she went to the interview, the were told that they would consider someone has ok scores on Part 1 but has also taken part 2.However I am planning to speak to the schools and find out.
However, could u guys who have got admission in the schools please share ur scores with me.
Thanks once again for all the help............I really appreciate it.You guys have a nice day.
Perplexed, actually sometime last week I was trying to send u a PM but got disconnected and lost the message. And after that got my result. Will send u again soon.Take care............

Hi perplexed,
Thanx for the reply :) .I came across a school which is asking for DAT scores too but only perceptual ability test scores&reading comprehension would be considered.Do you have any info regarding any material that would be helpful for preparation (esp PAT part)?

perplexed,
i was quite excited to know about the ucla program.but they have it only for citizens or permanent residents

does suny brook have a program for international students??

Hi All,

Merl
DAT, PAT ? sounds like greek & latin to me , all I can say is "Nice to know you are looking into various other options " :D :D (I have no clue.)
Iam pretty sure you'll get accepted in a good school real soon.
Good luck !

Docie,
Ya, UCLA has a program only for those lucky few & they have only 5 seats or so , but for anyone who qualifies its really worth a try .
I think suny brook has a program for citizens only ( might be a spaced based one too ).

drmouse,
Look at it this way ,, you had time to enjoy your stay in the US without diving right back into your books.Personally I think it was good that you chose not to take it right after you landed here :) You have good scores by just any std's so dont let yourself down. Its just that there are too many applicants & very very few seats making life diffcult for all of us.

Most schools do say that they would also consider part 2 if you have already given it, How that works is if they have 2 appilcants with the same part 1 scores ,experience etc , then they would choose the one with both part 1 & 2, But if they have someone with good part 1 scores & one with ok part 1 & good part 2 scores they'd still prefer the one with a better part 1 as that was a "requirement".

The best way to find out if you have a chance is to contact someone ( student) from that school & ask for the last yrs cut off score ( not the one they mention on the website), most schools stick to their avg scores & schools with tech test give a lot of weightage to the practical skills. (Lomalinda,UOP,USC,UCSF, UCLA)
".
I know a few ppl who had to retake the exam & they did very very well.
Alright Iam getting outta here...
Good Luck !

hi Desi girl!
thanks for the reply . I too have lost hope in UCSF ,Bye

riksh,
Have you got any acceptance so far ,I haven't Iam depressed now :( :( :(
I really hate to loss a year , I dont want to give part 1 again :p , it was a nightmare ( biochem etc).

Hi Everyone, :)

Perplexed,
Thanks so much for all the advice and encouragement. :) It really helps to know that u know people who retook the exam and did very well. You are the first person who told me that I shld retake the exam and also that someone actually did well.Otherwise who ever I spoke to(my friends from my school who took their Part 1 before me) told me that I shld not retake Part 1 and also they told me of ppl who did worse.Infact just today morning,my husband and I almost made the decision that I shld retake Part 1 as he also thinks that a handsome part 1 would be preferred over an ok part 1 and a good part 2.

I would really like to contact those people who retook their Part 1 and did better the next time.So would it be possible for u to give me their ids so that I can contact them and know what they did different the next time.
Or if anyone of u has retaken part 1 and done better, please let me know.

Also,I have 95 edition of dental decks. This time I would like to study from the most recent edition. So if anyone is interested in selling their part 1 decks to me or knows of anyone who has them, please let me know.

Also what is the general opinion about kaplan books.Does anyone have them for sale too?

Also I wish u all good luck with ur schools and admissions.I hope I can get into some school sometime.

Thats all for now.Hope u all have a nice day and a lovely weekend.............

Take care..........

drmouse.

Hi Merl,

I think UIC requires DAT.DAT has to be taken by US students who wish to get into dental schools.U can call this number for more information-
312-440-2689.I don't have a web address or would have given that to u.However will try to find one.In the meantime call this no and I am sure they will help u.

And would u be kind enough to let me know what edition of part 1 dental decks do u have.I am looking for the 2001 edition. So if u have them or know of anyone who has do let me know,please..........

hi ! Desigirl!! i have not got any acceptances either and well i was depressed too but now i am planning to get on with my life and appear for restorative exam .let's see if this helps out . Don't worry !! There is always a way out !have a good day :)

Dr Mouse !! Good decision :) Good Luck . My best wishes are with you !!

Thanks Riksh. :)

Hi drmouse,
Just a short note here.
Good decision ! Now that you already have the hang of it (NBD1) you'll do very well. You already know that you can get up to 83, so with just a lil more reference & brush ups you do very very well.( diff bet each % is just a couple of questions) I find it hard to believe that ppl do bad in their 2nd attempt, doesnt that defy logic ?
Its not some astrological phenomenon that says you will do worse in the second attempt, if you keep focused u'll ace it. It'll be much easier for you this time.

I'll have to get back to you on the contacts etc .
( my friends did join kaplan thou , frankly I think the dental decks you have right now , combined with kaplan will do the work .)
Take care !

Hi Mehr,

Here is the website for DAT.Hope it helps............
http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/testing/dat.asp

Hi! Everyone,
I'm planning to apply to Boston and NYU basically to give it a shot and see where I stand with my Part I score which I believe is not at all handsome.
The deadline for BU is 1st March and for NYU is 5th March, unfortunately my TOeEFL score expired last month, therfore I'm trying my best to find a testing center to take this test ASAP.
I'm requesting for your help to answer the question "Briefly note any activity to date which has been your most fulfillig experience" for BU and "Personal statement outlining your interest in the profession of dentistry and academic goals you wish to achieve at NYUCD" for NYU.(This is part of the application process)
Kindly let me know(post) of your responses as soon as possible because I have to mail these applications by Monday(11th Feb) to have a real shot for admission this fall (of course if they like everything else and I'm able to arrange for loans). Thanks a lot ,I'd appreciate your prompt response. Thanks!!!!

HI drmouse,
Let me go straight to your questions
BU
You should first pick one of your most fulfiling work preferably in the area of your expertise ( prostho , perio , surgery, pedo just any),I chose surgery & elaborated on the canine impaction I did during internship. Just make sure you know everything abt the topic you choose to write about.
ps- Bu didnt discuss abt my work (canine impaction) during the interivew.

NYU-
Basically they want to know why u r interested in dentistry, so why did you choose dentistry ?
I would say something like ...wanting to be in a profession where I would be able to combine my academic skills with my artistic skills ...
Goals at NYU-
To learn the modern methods in the field of dentistry since I've graduated & to be able to brush up with my practical skills , you can also talk abt your PG aspiration & so on ..

To ALL
That was just my opinion , please feel free to tell her what you all think is appropriate.

drmouse -I'll reply to your pm later on ...Iam just too lazy :D

Hi drmouse,
I have 98 edition& have read from them. there is no 2001 edition as far i know, only once in 2 yrs new edition is published.
Thanks for the info regarding DAT.
Just to make sure how are u applying to BU ?coz i don't remember coming across "fulfilling experience..."in online application.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks Perplexed for the answers. It is really very kind of you to give ur answers to me.

However today morning I tried talking to Kevin, the co-ordinator at BU for international program.According to him I shld retake Part 1 and improve my scores and not waste money trying to apply for this year as I am already very late and this year so far whatever seats have been filled have gone to students with 86 or 87.Now what do you guys think if it comes straight for the horses mouth. He also said that it would make no difference if I take Part 2 as they would look at my Part 1 scores and they prepare us for Part 2.So it would not matter how I do in Part 2.In any case I was taking a shot and was thinking of retaking Part 1 if I don't get in.but now I am definitely retaking part 1.So any help will be really appreciated.

Mehr,u are welcome.I had a form for UIC and could find the number for DAT on that.So I just gave it to you. Also I found that question for BU on both online application as well as the hard copy.I wonder why u didn't find it.Also last time I studied from old dental decks 95 edition. But I think there is a 2001 edition for sure as there is this person selling them on ebay. Will see how it works out.Anyway, would u please share with me how u studied for ur part 1.

Hey perplexed, any luck with the contacts. Please try.I would really appreciate it.

Well thats all for now.U guys take care and have a nice day.............. :)

Hey Merl, sorry for the mistake in ur name.

dr mouse,
Did you contact NYU , what did they say ? You can still give that a shot .

Hi everyone,

Did anyone give bench test so far? what is usually asked? any help regarding how to prepare for the bench test.

Iam not planning to take up the bench test, but I heard that a few schools in cali ( eg UCLA) have courses for the same.

Docie,
How's your part 2 prep's coming along ? Are you giving it on 26th ? All the best ..Let me know how it went.
Good Luck.

perplexed,
i postponed the test.i need more time to be confident enough to pass it with a reasonable score.i guess ill take it in april sometime...after a short vacation in march! i know i am being naughty but i just needed a break.this whole application process has been exhausting.
hows it going with you?

Docie,
I've been postponing it for a long time too . I just want to settle down with the admission etc .... before going back to the books . Concentration, is a problem right now :) .. May be I should take a vacation too . Where are you guys off to ?
Did you send your deposit to NYU ? How are things going ?

i payed the deposit at nyu.hoping i manage one more option in the meantime.otherwise i have almost reconciled to the idea of a three year long rigorous training at nyu interspersed with making the most of the city life.
well, you should take time off too...you deserve it!

going to sf and l.a...sick of the cold here!

WOW !!!!!!! I envy youuuuu
If you really want to be ride of the cold ...stay longer at LA. ( SF is cold too..thou relative )

I didnt see the other post of yours till now ..anyways ...my hubby will freak out if I talk abt a vacation now.... he's totally drained out ( financially) 'cause of all my "international escapades ". :D
Iam sure you'll get elsewhere. Keep your fingers crossed .
(Dont worry too much abt the deposit ....most ppl do that ..just to be safe.)

hi perplexed,
how are u ? I am all set& ready , hope it goes off well. eager to meet u ! Have a safe trip and all the best. Riksh

Hi,
I am new to this forum. This is an awesome site for advanced standing students. I was wondering whether anyone in this forum have applied to Indiana University advanced standing program for fall 2002 and if anybody have heard from them yet?. I was interviewed last year November and I still havent heard anything from them yet. Thanks in advance.

Hi all!
I am one of those confused advanced standing applicants looking for some information.
I got 88 in my part 1, and have been enrolled in a Master of Public Health and hope to complete it pretty soon. Because of several reasons, mainly financial, i was not able to apply early for different universities and all i could apply at the time that i applied was Boston University and NYU.
I applied pretty late like the 10th of January 2002. What do you think my chances are for this years program?
I really would appreciate some insight into what you guys think is my position here.
Thanks all!
Saravs

Hi saravs,
I think you have a chance for NYU. I am not sure about Boston University. Sometimes NYU does not even call a candidate for an interview and just directly send the acceptance letters pretty late in the year (like even April or May). Hope this helps.

Hi All,
I just came back from an interview , I'll reply to all your questions in detail later ....If you have anymore question please post it ...I'll get back to you all soon .

Take care..

Saravs,
Have you got an interview from BU, yet ?( If you havent got a call yet , call them up ). You stand a very good chance there. You can also try UPENN , they'll have seats available till the very end , your masters in pubilc health will also help you immensely
Future dentist,
Do call them up to check , I wonder why it's taking them so long to get back to you , they might be finalizing the regular batch ( 3rd-2nd year)eh ? They have a space based program, its also candidate based ( they decide which yr program that particular candidate will be doing.. 2yr or 3yr program ), This year they plan to accept only 5 students too.
Good luck & keep us posted.

Hi perplexed,
Thank you for your kind reply. I am going to call them up today. I sure will keep you posted. Good luck to you too.

Hi saravs,

I'm in the same boat as u,had applied to BU bit late.I called them up to confirm about my application said they would conact only after 3-4 weeks after the application is received,so got to wait for some more time... to even get interveiw call.Did u apply to UPENN?
All the best.

Hi,
Did anyone hear from UOP ?

Thanks for replying, perplexed and merl.
I will give them a call to find out whats happening with this.
Guys one more thing, whats the rationale behind writing part2 before you enter school? I,m kinda confused on that issue. I will appreciate anybody who can fill me on that.
Merl, what are your scores? I did not apply for UPenn. I did hear from them saying that they received my application and that the requirements for the interveiw are that u should get 580 in TOEFL and 82+ in NBDE 1... and that if I did, I MIGHT hear from them about the interview. So that was not very reassuring...
anyways, I will keep you guys posted.
Thanks all,
Saravs

The adv of taking part 2 before schools starts has just one benefit ie ...
YOU ARE DONE WITH IT ...

Most ppl prefer to give it when they are in schools as they coach you for it , but if you've already taken it then you can focus your attention on the more pressing things at school.
So you save some time when u r in school & its less stressful to take it now . But a disadvantage to it is .. you may not do as good or will have to work harder if you give it before you join school.
Just my 2 cents..
