Is it appropriate for me to call the school I am waitlisted (my top choice) and tell them I have an acceptance at another school (2nd choice) who is requiring me to put a deposit in by this week?
Can i ask if they can give me my waitlist decision sooner? Is it too assuming?

I would really appreciate if ANYONE can give me insight/advice. thank you!

I would not call as then they might just give you a rejection if they aren't ready yet. I'd imagine with most schools closed now trying to figure out how to finish the academic year, adcom meetings aren't a high priority. It may also depend on when the school's deposit deadline is in order to see how many spots they have remaining to fill.

If you want your waitlist decision now, it's NO! The waitlist means the class is full - they will call you if someone drops out. Otherwise, you're not getting a spot. They aren't holding open spots for waitlisted people. Besides, the school is dealing with 1 million other issues right now.

@zToothinator @Ivy.ch
thank you both for your advice!
Yeah, I understand they have bigger problems right now which is why I was hesitant to do it..
I know in previous cycles people have done this so I just wanted to see if it was appropriate or not.

I might just put down the deposit for the school before the deadline and just take that loss if my top choice ends up giving me a spot...

It doesn't help. You can call and say you're still really interested, that's fine. But if you ask for a decision now, they'd tell you no and dump your application in the trash. It would be very unwise for you to miss the deposit deadline hoping the top choice offers you a spot. Chances you get the spot, at this point in the cycle, is very low.

If you put down a deposit and send in the enrollment matriculation agreement papers can you still jump ship and go to a different school? Or are you locked in

You can still attend a different school. Some people place deposits at multiple schools in order to have more time to think about it.

Waitlist announcements will happen at the pace dictated by the admissions committee, not on request. Stand pat. There's no guarantee that the offer from your first choice is going to come according to your timeline. If you're happy with your second choice, put the deposit down. Sure, you might get the call a week later, a month later, before orientation starts (at your committed school or the one you desire). This happens. A lot.

I know someone who attended a school for a month, got accepted to another school and left to attend the new one.

Yeah, I understand. I shouldn't be too straight forward and assuming. I guess I was just hoping not to put down a deposit because these are the couple of weeks both of my schools have sent out waitlist acceptance in the past(but with the pandemic, things have been hazy...)

@Mr.Smile12 and @Ivy.ch
Do you think I can say something along the lines of
"I am writing to you because I have recently received an acceptance from another dental school but I would like to express my commitment to your dental school. I would be honored if given the opportunity of admission...etc."

or do you suggest I completely not even mention I have another acceptance?

dude, we told you already. You can Call and say you are still interested, then hang up. If they need someone to fill a spot, they’ll go down their list. They do not have a seat for you right now. They don’t care about your deposit. Anything else you mention is going to hurt you.

Put down your deposit and secure your seat. If you get an offer from the waitlist, forfeit your deposit to your first school. This happens. You may not like it, but that's how things work if you want to go to dental school. Otherwise you might lose both schools.
