Hey everybody! I just recently (a week ago) made the decision to apply to podiatry school this year and luckily have received a few invites. I am currently in school with a full 16 credit load so I can finish my undergraduate in July, and be ready for pod school in september. This means I am VERY pressed for time, and even more pressed for cash so I don't have the means to attend all the interviews (most likely two, possibly three of them). So, I have a question or two about two of the schools:

DMU- is telling me their class for this september is full, and that they are inviting me for an interview for their wait-list. Is this as big of a waste of time as it sounds? I would have already dismissed it, but DMU was among my top two choices... What do you guys think? Even if the interview goes well, will I be too far down the list to have a chance of enrollment?

Ohio- I applied here more or less to just be complete. It hasn't ever caught my eye as much as some other schools that have invited me. But when they contacted me they claimed I am a strong canidate for scholarship money (which was never mentioned by any of the other 3 schools). If that's true, then I may take the time to interview with them (because scholarships just make life that much easier!). So my question is: Do they claim everyone is a strong canidate for scholarships? How much stock do you think I should put in this "canidancy"?

Thanks you so much fellow pod enthusiasists, I know the advice you are going to offer will be very helpful!

I interviewed at both DMU and Ohio in the past 40 days or so. I was accepted to ohio and placed on the alternate list at DMU.

DMU is a VERY nice program, academically I believe second to none. Clinically ive heard some doubts of their volume and diversity, however when i was there i got a very good impression from their faculty so I believe you're in good hands. Im not sure exactly how their waitlist works but I have heard that it is common for them to put as many people on it as possible because they want to end up with the best possible candidates. I would probably drop other schools to go there. So, my advice would be to check it out if its not too big of a burden financially or on your schedule.

As for Ohio, its a nice shool. Very technologically sound. Probably not as academically adavanced as the integrated schools but not slacking by any means. The biggest difference to me for Ohio is that it seems that you have to create your own learning environment rather than become a part of one. I think this is partially related to having to live so far off campus though. As for scholarships, you get 5,000 if you have above a 3.5 gpa and 10,000 if above a 3.75. So you know where you stand there. They have the largest class size and are not full yet, so once again if its not a burden I would visit, because you may like it and you will definitely get accepted.

What other schools are you looking at? Good Luck.

I think that if you're very pressed for cash, interviewing for a wait list spot might not be in your best interest (if you had extra cash, i would say go for it; there might be movement on the list depending on if people get into the MD/DO/Dental or whatever programs that they applied to as well). Do you have all your LOR's (from faculty and a podiatrist) and an MCAT score? If not save your money and wait until next year if you really want to go to DMU.

If you just want to get into a school, then find the other schools that are still looking for people to fill their spots to increase your chances.

good luck.

Thanks for the info! I love SDN, I don't know where I would be without all the knowledge that is shared on here daily.

I interview with Temple on the 15th, and have also been invited by Midwestern.

If anyone else has any input, keep it coming!

Temple is a good place. The interview is not bad and David Martin is an interesting character. They're going to rebuild in the future, so don't be deterred by how the buildings look now. Nice program and the clinics looked very busy. 2 pieces of advice: eat breakfast (the interview is during lunch, so you might take a bite and get called in like I was) and wear good shoes (its not a lot of walking, but if you're a female, heels might not be the best option for the stairs).

Kale gives some good advice. It really comes down to how your money matches your motivations. You have picked a fairly wide range of school geographically speaking, so i am not sure where you will be traveling from, but if you went to all of the interviews it would cost a fair chunk of change.

OCPM and Temple are most likely to accept you as they have the largest and one of the larger class sizes respectively, and often accept people pretty late.

I would have thought that Midwestern would be full by now given their small class size, but have heard of quite a few people still getting interviews so i guess not. I looked into this school some but didn't apply b/c it's on the other side of the country for me. From what I have heard though...Solid academics/ good learning environment, have heard the facilities are nice, but maybe not as nice as you would expect from a new school. Haven't heard much about their clinics, so you would have to ask someone else. Cost of living is probably above average to high.

As kale said Temple seems pretty nice. I haven't been there personally but have spoke with a resident who graduated from there. Haven't heard great things about their facilites, but have heard their clinics are quite diverse. Cost of living is probably above average to expensive.

Best point about DMU is that if you do decide to go interview MAKE sure you have all of your materials in. I scrambled a little bit before that interview and got my LORs set up at the last minute. Long story short, in my podiatrists busy practice he forgot to send out my LORs and unannounced to me DMU didnt have his LOR at my interview which is my strongest refferal and probably part of the reason im on the alternate list as i was fairly competitive academically. If you have everything in and they like you they may make room for you.

I already gave you a brief rundown of my thoughts on OCPM. Biggest con I would say is simply the travel. You cant live within 15 minutes of the school which can deter from attendance and i believe take away from the learning atmosphere. And you have to drive to all of your clinic rotations. On the brightside, VERY CHEAP cost of living.

Luckily I had my MCAT scores and LOR's all ready to go so they will have them for the interviews. I think I'm going to visit Temple and OCPM, just because of the higher probability I will be accepted there. I would still really like to check out Midwestern though because it is the closest to where I'm from (Idaho). How competitive is admission this late in the season for a school with the class size like Midwestern? Obviously it is more competitive, but is it considerably larger to the point it should effect my decision as to whether take the time to visit them or not?

Thanks so much for your help everyone!

well u got an easy decision. they are filled and are not offering any interviews anymore.

Then why do I have one scheduled for the 28th? Think its a similar situation to DMU, interviewing for a waitlist? I'll call them tomorrow, but you think they would have told me if that was what I was interviewing for...

I would check your email. There is an important email going around to people yet to interview (the last interview date is 5/29... so lucky you). Adcom said that they are yet to fill their seats however offers have been extended that could fill the class at any point. If your stats are killer, I think your chances of getting in are high.

Midwestern is not full yet as of an hour or two ago. I specifically asked at the admissions office, and they said that there are still open spots. They also said they don't "over-accept", so everyone that they extend an invitation to has a spot reserved until they either accept or reject admissions. So I take that to mean that if there are still some open spots, you are not just interviewing for the waitlist, but some of the interviewees will be accepted. I don't know whether that will be true of the interivew date you have at the end of the month, but as of now, they are not full.

It would not hurt to give them a call and find out though.

It took me a whole year of reading these forums to become brave enough to join. Yes, there is a-lot BS on forums like this, but you can't beat a good non-biased opinion. At this particular point in time, we have some good intentioned, positive people contributing to the Pod forum and it rocks.:xf:
