Hi everyone! I am currently a second-year pre-medical student majoring in Biology at Columbia University. Though it is still quite early, I am wondering if I'm on the right track in applying to medical school, and if I can make a competitive applicant. My cGPA is 3.54 and my science GPA is around 3.30. I am also the first in my family to go to college. Last summer, I did the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program at Columbia medical school, volunteered as a microbiology lab assistant full-time for a month, attended a three-day leadership conference, and volunteered in a free clinic also that summer. I volunteered in the ICU for a semester last year.
Currently, I am working as a research assistant at the Dept. of Cardiology and as a research intern at the Critical Care Neurology dept in a different hospital. I am a member of the AMSA public health committee, Public Relations coordinator of my public health society, member of Charles Drew Premedical Society, participated in culture shows as a model, and write feature articles for the Science Review. I have three scholarships and was semi-finalist in a national contest.

From the threads I have seen so far, I realize my GPA isn't all that great, and I haven't done much extracurriculars time-wise. I will continue to work hard, and any advice is much appreciated! Thank you very much.

Your EC's are fine for now... work on getting your GPA up and killing the mcat. Pick up some shadowing/volunteer work in a field you're interested in junior/senior year, and you'll be good to go.

Apply early and broadly.

You sound like a very busy person. Don't let your ECs overwhelm you to the point where your GPA suffers. As you pointed out, it isn't optimal right now, and your priority needs to be getting straight As to raise it up before application time. That BCPM GPA, especially, needs work.
